Movie-a-Day Challenge: Purple Hearts

Purple hearts

This post is part of my movie-a-day challenge in which I will watch a film every day for 60 days. You can see all the posts for this challenge HERE

Hey, Film Fanatics!

So, I just curled up with a bowl of popcorn and my too-expensive streaming service to watch “Purple Hearts,” and I’ve got some feels to share. You know, it’s one of those flicks where love and life throw some curveballs, and you’re not sure whether to cheer or grab a tissue.

Let’s talk about the premise first: it’s a bit like if Hallmark met ‘An Officer and a Gentleman,’ with a sprinkle of Spotify playlists on top. Cassie, played by Sofia Carson (who’s also belting out tunes like it’s her personal concert), is a struggling musician with a heart condition that’s got more issues than Vogue. Then we’ve got Luke, played by Nicholas Galitzine, who’s a Marine with a past that’s murkier than my coffee.

They’re like oil and water, cats and dogs, peanut butter and… onions? Anyway, they clash. Majorly. But here’s the catch – they end up marrying for the military benefits (because healthcare, y’all – I can relate) with a plan that’s got ‘What could possibly go wrong?’ written all over it in neon lights.

Now, you think you know where this is going, right? Pretend love turns into the real deal, with lots of longing looks and almost-kisses? Bingo! But don’t roll your eyes just yet. “Purple Hearts” serves up the cheese, but like that gourmet kind you can’t stop nibbling on. It’s predictable, sure, but comforting, like your grandma’s casserole.

Sofia Carson isn’t just a Disney alum here; she’s giving us depth, people! And the girl can sing – the soundtrack is like a character in its own right. Then there’s Nicholas Galitzine, who’s giving off broody vibes that might just make you overlook his character’s less savory moments. Together, they kind of work in a ‘we shouldn’t root for this, but we are’ way.

The film’s got heart (pun absolutely intended), and it doesn’t shy away from the real stuff either. It brushes against heavy themes – war, healthcare woes, the meaning of sacrifice. It doesn’t dive deep, but it dips its toes enough to make you think a little between the swoons.

Sure, the romance might be as by-the-book as they come, and some subplots could’ve used a little more baking in the story oven, but “Purple Hearts” isn’t pretending to be anything it’s not. It’s got its sappy, tear-jerker moments that might have you reaching for the tissues or rolling your eyes – sometimes both at the same time.

Is it groundbreaking cinema? Nope. Is it a cozy night in with a movie that knows its audience? Heck yeah. “Purple Hearts” is the film equivalent of that one song you say you’ll listen to just ironically, but then it’s on repeat for a week straight.

So, grab your comfort snack of choice, check any cynicism at the door, and let “Purple Hearts” take you on a little emotional rollercoaster. It’s a nice reminder that sometimes, the simplest stories can be just what the doctor ordered.

Stay snuggly and keep streaming,

Roger
