How I Read So Much

A question that I receive a lot is how I manage to read so much. I typically average about 150 – 175 books per year, sometimes more, sometimes less.

What’s funny is that I don’t go out of my way to read an excessive amount of books — it kind of just happens. However, I will say that I make a point of reading every night for at least one hour. So that is my first tip: Be consistent. I have built reading into my schedule so that at the same time every evening, I’ll sit down and read for my designated hour. Adding your reading time to your daily calendar or schedule can help with this.

Another reason is that I rarely watch a lot of television. Now, I have nothing against television. It’s simply not a priority for me. Personally, I derive much more enjoyment from reading a book or practicing the piano than watching tv. Some people enjoy heading out to the pub every night, also something that I don’t often do. So in this way, my next tip is: Prioritize your reading time.

Increasing your reading speed can help you read more, and the best way to increase your speed? Read more. Studies indicate that the more you read, the faster you read. As you gain more reading experience, your speed will naturally increase. So the next tip is: Read more to get faster.

I stopped reading for quite a while a few years back. I used to enjoy a lot of young adult and urban fantasy novels. The problem is, is that my hoity-toity, artsy-fartsy friends loved to trash the books I enjoyed, telling me I should read more “adult” books — more serious classic literature and non-fiction. So I did. And… they bored me to tears. So I stopped reading completely for quite some time. Thus, my tip here is: Read what you enjoy. Otherwise, you won’t be motivated to read. These friends, by the way, are now former friends.

This leads me to my next tip: Bail on books you don’t like. If you’re reading a book that’s just not clicking with you, leave and instead pick up a book you will enjoy. There’s no law or rule that says you have to finish a book. If it sucks, ditch it or “DNF” it (DNF stands for “did not finish” and has turned into a verb over the years).

Read more audiobooks. I manage to burn through quite a few audiobooks during the year, probably about 2-3 per month — and this is from someone who works from home and doesn’t commute to work. Whenever I’m cooking, cleaning, or out for a walk, I turn on an audiobook and fall into a story. This way, I get to enjoy many additional books without having to carve out time for reading. Now there are those who say listening to audiobooks isn’t reading. To them, I say rubbish! Consuming a story is consuming a story, no matter how you do it. It can also be argued that writing a novel on the computer isn’t “writing,” it’s “typing” because writing involves a pencil and paper.

Always have a book on your person. I never go anywhere without a book, especially if there’s a possibility of having to wait. Anytime I have a doctor’s appointment, dentist appointment, a morning at the DMV, I ensure that I have my Kindle or a physical book with me. Of course, you can also read books on your smartphone if you’re so inclined.

I also keep a TBR list. This is a list of books that I want to read (TBR = to be read). This way, when I finish a book, I don’t need to agonize for days over what to read next or try to find a book online that sounds interesting. I have a file on my computer, so whenever I hear about a book that sounds interesting, I add it to my list. I also belong to the Book of the Month Club, so that’s one book per month (sometimes more!) that’s moved to the top of my list.

So there you have it. Some ideas on how to read more. How about you? Do you have any tips to share?

Sometimes, It’s fun to play hooky

IMG 2629

Today I decided to play hooky and take advantage of the beautiful summer weather. I’m a major summer person, and each year, I promise myself to enjoy it every chance I get. I never want to abruptly slide into autumn, realizing (and regretting) that I completely missed out on summer.

Given that I work from home and have flexible hours, it really wasn’t playing hooky as I simply rearranged my working hours from morning to evening.

So what did I do today? I hopped on my scooter and had lunch at a drive-in about an hour away, called K.C.K.’s Crazy Corner.

Last year during the pandemic, I decided that I would only eat out at drive-ins, so I began what I called my “Crazy Wisconsin Drive-in Tour,” where I would scoot to a different one each week. I visited close to a dozen drive-ins last summer.

I had so much fun doing it that I’ve decided to do it again this year, except with new ones. So today was the beginning of season 2 of my drive-in tour.

By the way, the food at K.C.K.’s Crazy Corner was fantastic. But what especially made this place a new favorite for me were the employees. Super friendly and super sweet. Plus, they have homemade pie! I’ll definitely be back.

A Visit to the DMV

Averie woodard j4nBSqFf08U unsplash

Earlier last month, I received a postcard in the mail with the most dreaded sentence in the English language:

It’s time to renew your driver’s license.

All you need to do is mention “DMV” to elicit a shudder from others. Years ago, I had some pretty heinous experiences at the DMV. On two occasions, I spent a good part of a day there, being shifted from line to line by often surly employees. I was hoping that I’d be able to renew my license online — which is an option these days. But I was dismayed to discover that I need to convert my license to a Real ID, and you can only do that in person at a physical DMV location.

Obtaining a Real ID is not required — I could have simply renewed my license online without getting one. But without one, I would be unable to fly in the US. Supposedly, a Real ID will be required by airlines beginning in October of 2021, I do believe.

A few years ago, when I was getting reading to obtain a motorcycle license, I mentioned to a friend how much I was dreading going down to the Milwaukee DMV office. He said, “Oh, I always go to the one in Saukville. They’re friendly there, and it’s rarely ever busy.” Saukville is a much smaller town than Milwaukee, about 25 minutes away. I decided to take his advice, and sure enough, the employees were delightful, and there was hardly any wait.

So I chose to go the same route for my license renewal and drove up to Saukville on a Tuesday morning. I walked in, and I was the only customer there. I filled out my renewal form, brought it to the first open window, and I was in & out with 15 minutes. Maybe even more like 10. That has to have been my fastest experience at a DMV ever.

Perhaps it’s not fair of me to assume that the Milwaukee DMV is still a nightmare. After all, the last time I was there was well over a decade ago (maybe closer to two?), and things certainly could have improved since then. But since I had such good luck with the Saukville office prior, I stuck with them.

So the next time it’s time for you to visit the DMV, maybe try an office in a smaller city/town, even if it’s out of your way. It might be worth it.

Blog Update

Markus winkler fRAIQHKcc0 unsplash

I used to post a lot of book reviews on this blog — so many, in fact, that I decided to create an entirely separate blog for them called “Roger’s Reads.” So for the past couple of years, I’ve posted reviews several times a week on that blog.

The result, unfortunately, was that I ended up ignoring this blog except for a few updates here and there. After some careful deliberation, I decided to scale back on reviews. I was spending an inordinate amount of time on them when I felt I should be putting my energy into other things. Given that I sometimes read close to 200 books a year, that’s a lot of reviews!

So I’ll only be doing reviews for Advanced Reader Copies that I receive, and I’ll be turning my attention back to this blog – though I may chat about some favorite books here from time to time. As usual, I’ll be writing about things that interest me: writing, photography, tech, and musings about everyday life.

I’m considering doing a challenge where I publish a blog post every day for 90-day. Let’s see how it goes.

I’ve you’re not interested in my daily ramblings, note that I also have a weekly newsletter in which I share news about my novels as well as links to articles that I shared on Social Media over the past week.

So stay tuned. More posts are coming.
