This post is part of my movie-a-day challenge in which I will watch a film every day for 365 days. Today is Day 38. You can see all the posts for this challenge HERE To see the original Movie-a-Day Challenge post, click HERE.

So, I finally sat down to watch “Mapplethorpe,” directed by Ondi Timoner, and whoa, it’s quite the film. If you’re into art, controversy, and a more than dash of rebellious spirit, then buckle up, because this movie takes you on a wild ride through the life of legendary photographer Robert Mapplethorpe.

First things first, the plot. The film is like a time machine, zipping us back to the 70s and 80s in New York City. It’s all about Robert Mapplethorpe (played by the enigmatic Matt Smith), who’s not just any photographer, but one who pushed boundaries like they were going out of style. The movie dives into his life, from his early days as a starving artist to becoming a renowned photographer, known for his provocative and often controversial work. 📸

Matt Smith, oh my goodness, he just morphs into Mapplethorpe. It’s like he’s channelling the guy’s soul or something. He captures Mapplethorpe’s passion, his drive, and even his flaws with such intensity that you can’t help but be drawn in. And the way he portrays Mapplethorpe’s hunger for both artistic recognition and personal exploration? Just brilliant. But here’s where the film shines: the portrayal of Mapplethorpe’s artistic journey ✨. We see him rise from a young, naive student to a confident, controversial artist who challenged the boundaries of art and society ✊✊.

But it’s not all roses and sunshine. The film doesn’t shy away from the darker aspects of Mapplethorpe’s life, including his struggle with his identity, his turbulent relationships, and later, his battle with AIDS. It’s gritty, raw, and sometimes pretty intense. But hey, that was Mapplethorpe’s reality, you know?

What really got me was how the film showcased Mapplethorpe’s art. It’s bold, unapologetic, and, let’s be honest, pretty risqué. But it also makes you think about the role of art in society, and how it can challenge norms and push boundaries. The movie doesn’t just show his work; it immerses you in his creative process, making you feel like you’re right there in his studio, watching him capture those iconic images.

The supporting cast also deserves a shoutout. Marianne Rendón as Patti Smith brings this raw, almost electric energy to the screen. Their relationship, fraught with artistic passion and personal complexities, is portrayed with such authenticity that it almost feels like you’re peering into their private world.

Now, here’s a fun fact for you: Did you know that Mapplethorpe’s work is included in numerous public collections, including the Guggenheim and the Whitney? 🏛️ Talk about leaving a mark!

Overall, “Mapplethorpe” is a film that’s as complex as the man it portrays. It’s not just about the scandal and the shock value of his work; it’s about an artist’s unyielding quest for beauty in all its forms, even if it ruffles more than a few feathers. It’s a raw, unfiltered look into the life of a man who dared to see the world differently and had the courage to show it through his lens.

So, if you’re in the mood for a film that’s a bit artsy, a tad edgy, and totally captivating, give “Mapplethorpe” a watch. Just maybe not with your grandma, unless she’s super, super cool with that kinda thing. 😉

Catch you tomorrow!

Movie-a-Day Challenge: Free Guy

December 9, 2023 by Roger Hyttinen Leave a Comment

free guy movie image

Today, we’re diving headfirst into the world of pixels and possibility with a review of the film, “Free Guy.” 🎮🕹️ Buckle up, because this one’s wild! Directed by Shawn Levy, this 2021 flick totally caught me off guard – in the best possible way, of course!

First things first, the plot is like a mashup of a video game geek’s dream and a rom-com that’s had a bit too much caffeine – and I’m here for it. We’ve got Ryan Reynolds playing Guy, a bank teller who’s living a normal, ordinary live until he discovers he’s actually an NPC (non-playable character, for those not in the know) in a video game. And not just any game, but this chaotic, open-world extravaganza called “Free City.” Imagine finding out your whole life is just a backdrop for gamers? Mind-blowing, right? Talk about an existential crisis!

But here’s the twist – Guy doesn’t just take this revelation lying down. He decides to become the hero of his own story. It’s like watching your average Joe suddenly deciding to level up in life, literally. Ryan Reynolds is, as usual, his ever-charming, witty self. He brings this innocence and likability to Guy (AKA ‘Blue Shirt Guy’) that just makes you root for him. And his comedic timing? Spot on! 😂

Now, let’s talk about the other characters. Jodie Comer plays Millie (AKA Molotov Girl), a game developer and the love interest who helps Guy break free from his virtual shackles. She’s in “Free City” to uncover evidence that the game’s publisher, soon-to-be-arch-nemesis Antwan (played by the always fantastic Taika Waititi), stole her code. Jodie is a powerhouse, guys. She’s fierce, smart, and her chemistry with Ryan? Chef’s kiss! 🤌

The supporting cast deserves a shoutout too. Joe Keery (yes, Steve from “Stranger Things”) plays Keys, Millie’s friend and fellow developer. He’s got this awkward, sweet vibe that’s just endearing. And Taika Waititi, as the over-the-top villain? He’s like a walking meme. Every scene with him is a mix of “I can’t believe he just did that” and “I can’t stop laughing.” And who could forget Utkarsh Ambudkar as Mouser, the programmer with a conscience? They all add so much depth and humor to the film, making it a truly enjoyable experience.

What I loved about “Free Guy” is how it plays with the concept of free will and identity. It’s like, are we all just following scripts in life, or can we break free and write our own stories? Deep, right?

But don’t worry, it’s not all existential crises and pondering the meaning of life. The movie’s packed with action, humor, and some pretty sweet visual effects. The scenes in “Free City” are a riot of color and chaos – like if “Grand Theft Auto” had a baby with “The Truman Show.”

It also has a surprisingly touching message about self-discovery, free will, and the power of kindness. ❤️ It reminds us that even within the limitations of our own realities, we have the power to choose our own paths and make a difference in the world. ✨

And let’s not forget the Easter eggs and cameo appearances! If you’re a gamer or a pop-culture enthusiast, you’ll have a field day spotting all the references. It’s like a treasure hunt but with memes and gaming lore.

So yeah, “Free Guy” is a fun, feel-good movie that’s more than just laughs and special effects. It’s got heart, a bit of philosophy, and a reminder that sometimes, you just gotta put on your sunglasses and be the hero of your own game.

And hey, before you go, fun fact: Did you know that the film’s title “Free Guy” is a play on the phrase “free guy,” which is slang for someone who is not easily manipulated or controlled, and can do anything he wants? But that’s not all. I read on Polygon that the title of the movie itself is actually a reference to gamer slang that isn’t really used, or all that known anymore. In that context, the phrase “free guy” means an extra life, or a one up. Pretty clever, right?

But… is “Free Guy” worth your time? Abso-friggin-lutely! If you’re looking for a fun, lighthearted movie with a good dose of heart and humor, this one’s a winner. Just grab your popcorn, settle in, and prepare to be transported to a world where anything is possible.

Signing off with a pixelated heart,
Roger 🎥❤️

P.S. Can you tell from all the gushing that I absolutely loved this film?

Movie-a-Day Challenge: If I Stay

If I Stay movie image

This post is part of my movie-a-day challenge in which I will watch a film every day for 365 days. Today is Day 35. You can see all the posts for this challenge HERE To see the original Movie-a-Day Challenge post, click HERE.

Hey there, friends! 🍿✨

So, last night’s film for my movie-a-day challenge was “If I Stay,” directed by R.J. Cutler, and oh boy, was it an intense one! First off, let’s talk about the plot. This movie, based on Gayle Forman’s novel, is an emotional dive into the life of Mia Hall, played brilliantly by Chloë Grace Moretz. Mia, a super talented cellist with dreams of Juilliard, faces the ultimate life-or-death choice after a devastating car accident leaves her in a coma. The story weaves through her past and present, bringing us closer to her world of music, family, love, and the difficult decisions life throws at us.

Chloë Grace Moretz absolutely nails the character of Mia. She brings such depth and vulnerability to the role, making you feel every bit of Mia’s turmoil and passion. Then there’s Jamie Blackley, who plays Adam, Mia’s rockstar boyfriend. Their chemistry is just 💥 – it’s raw, it’s real, and it perfectly captures young love with all its intensity and complications.

What really struck me was how the film uses music as a character in itself. Mia’s cello performances are hauntingly beautiful and serve as a poignant backdrop to the unfolding drama. It’s like the music is Mia’s anchor, keeping her connected to the world she’s unsure of returning to.

The supporting cast, including Mireille Enos and Joshua Leonard as Mia’s parents, add such richness to the story. They’re the cool, supportive parents everyone wishes they had, bringing both humor and heart to the film. Their family dynamics, full of warmth and understanding, form a stark contrast to the tragedy that befalls them.

Director R.J. Cutler has done a fantastic job balancing the film’s emotional weight with moments of lightness. The flashbacks are seamlessly integrated, offering glimpses into Mia’s life that help us understand her dilemma in the coma. It’s a story about love, loss, and the choices we make, told in a way that’s both touching and thought-provoking.

Now, I won’t lie – you might want to keep a box of tissues handy. “If I Stay” is a tearjerker, but in the best possible way. It’s a movie that makes you ponder the what-ifs of life and appreciate the moments we often take for granted.

IMHO, “If I Stay” is more than just a teen drama. It’s a beautifully crafted film that resonates on a deeper level. Whether you’re a fan of the book, a lover of music, or just someone who appreciates a good, heartfelt story, this movie is definitely worth your time.

Catch you tomorrow for more movie talk! 🎥💖

Cheers,
Roger

Movie-A-Day Challenge: Haunted Mansion

A Ghostly Good Time with “Haunted Mansion” 👻

Hey there, friends! 🌟

It’s your friendly amateur neighborhood movie reviewer here, and oh boy, do I have a treat for you! Remember how I’ve been itching to see “Haunted Mansion” since its big screen debut? Well, I finally watched it, and folks, it was a ghostly blast! Directed by the incredibly talented Justin Simien, this 2023 film is a hauntingly delightful ride. 🎢👻

First things first, those of you who have been following me for awhile know I can never resist a good ghost story (I even wrote a series of books about ghosts!). There’s just something about things that go bump in the night that gets my adrenaline pumping! And “Haunted Mansion”? It’s like a rollercoaster ride through a ghostly paradise. 👻🎢

The plot? It’s a wild, whimsical adventure that had me at the edge of my seat (and not just because I spilled my popcorn). So, the story revolves around a mother (Rosario Dawson) and her nine-year-old son (Chase Dillon) who, in classic haunted house style, unknowingly move into a mansion that’s, you guessed it, haunted. And I’m talking really, really haunted. But here’s the twist – it’s not just any old ghost. These spirits (and there are a lot of them!) have sass and secrets that could give Casper a run for his money!

But what really took this movie to the next level for me were the side characters, especially the ones played by Owen Wilson, Tiffany Haddish, LaKeith Lee Stanfield and Danny DeVito. 🌟. These four are like the ultimate ghost-busting squad, peppered with over-the-top silliness.

Owen Wilson, with his signature laid-back style, took on the role of the priest, and boy, did he deliver! His character was this delightful mix of skepticism and accidental bravery. Watching him navigate the ghostly chaos with a mix of bewilderment and dry humor was just hilarious. His comedic timing and those classic Owen Wilson expressions made every scene he was in a treat. 🕊️🙏

Then we have Tiffany Haddish as the medium. She was an absolute powerhouse! Her character was larger than life, sassy, and so, so funny. The way she conducted séances with flair and drama, you’d think she was hosting a talk show for the spirits. 🔮💫

LaKeith Lee Stanfield’s played a paranormal photographer (did you know there was even such a thing?). He played a key role in the film, bringing a unique blend of intensity and vulnerability. His character’s journey throughout the movie added depth to the storyline, intertwining with the supernatural elements in a way that was both intriguing and emotionally resonant. His performance was a standout, showcasing his range and talent in a genre that combines both humor and horror. 🌟👻

And let’s not forget Danny DeVito as the professor – a role he was born to play. His character was this eccentric, paranormal-loving genius, and every moment with him was pure gold. The way he brought a sense of wonder and excitement to the haunted happenings in the mansion added a fantastic layer of comedy and charm to the film. 📚🔧

The dynamic between all the characters was one of the highlights of the movie. They each brought their unique style to the table, creating a symphony of laughs and quirky moments. Whether they were facing off against the mischievous ghosts or unraveling the mysteries of the mansion, their chemistry was undeniable.

Oops, I almost forgot to mention the most spine-chilling part of “Haunted Mansion” – the evil ghost! 😱 So, gather ’round, fellow thrill-seekers, because this part of the story is where things get really juicy.

Nestled among the playful and mischievous spirits in the mansion is one ghost who’s not just haunting the halls – they’re downright terrifying. This ghost is like the head honcho of haunts, the big bad of the spirit world. Picture this: a menacing presence with a bone-chilling aura that could freeze your soul. The kind of ghost that makes the other ghosts go, “Nope, not messing with that one.” 👻

The brilliance of the film lies in how it builds up this dark entity’s backstory. It’s not just your typical ‘boo, I’m scary’ kind of deal. There’s depth and darkness, a twisted tale that unravels as the family uncovers the secrets of the mansion. And let me tell you, the reveal is a doozy – it’s like a plot twist had a baby with another plot twist. 🌀

The evil ghost brings a whole new level of suspense and tension to the movie. Every creak of the floorboard, every flicker of the lights – you’re left wondering if it’s them. And the confrontations? Oh boy, they’re like epic showdowns between the living and the not-so-living. It’s this thrilling cat-and-mouse game that keeps you glued to the screen. The evil ghost in “Haunted Mansion” adds that perfect touch of horror to the film’s comedic and whimsical vibe. It’s the cherry on top of a deliciously spooky sundae.

But it’s not all spooky and scary. The film is sprinkled with a delightful dose of humor that had me chuckling in between my shrieks. The script is witty, the comedic timing is on point, and the jokes? Well, they’re dead funny! 💀😂. The humor is a delightful blend of witty one-liners and slapstick that had me laughing out loud.

In short (though this review has ended up being anything but short), “Haunted Mansion” is a ghostly gem that’s worth the watch. It’s got the chills, the thrills, and a whole lot of laughs. So grab your popcorn, snuggle under a blanket (for protection, obviously), and get ready for a hauntingly good time!

And that’s the scoop on “Haunted Mansion.” Trust me, you’ll want to see it for yourself. Until then, happy ghost hunting! 👻🔦

Catch you tomorrow,
Roger 🌟🎥👋

Movie-a-Day Challenge: The Sorcerer and the White Snake

🐍✨ “The Sorcerer and the Snake”: A Magical Rollercoaster! ✨🐍

Hey there, movie buffs! 🎬

So, I finally got around to watching “The Sorcerer and the White Snake,” directed by Siu-Tung Ching, and oh boy, do I have thoughts! 🤔 Released in 2011, this film is like a wild ride through a fantastical universe, and as someone who adores fantasy movies, I was like a kid in a candy store. 🍬✨

The plot is based on the Chinese legend, “The Legend of the White Snake,” which is already a cool starting point. Imagine a story where love transcends the boundaries of the natural and supernatural worlds! 💖🌌 The main gist is this: a beautiful snake spirit, Bai Suzhen (seriously, the CGI here is 😍), falls for a mortal, Xu Xian. Classic love story, right? Except, add in a sorcerer who’s not too happy about this interspecies romance.

The sorcerer, Fa Hai, played by Jet Li (yes, THE Jet Li), is a monk with some serious magical prowess and a vendetta against supernatural beings. The dude’s all about maintaining the natural order, but let’s be real, he could use a chill pill. 🧊 His battles with Bai Suzhen are visually stunning. There’s this one scene where they’re dueling with magical powers, and it’s like watching fireworks! 🎆

The movie takes us on a rollercoaster of emotions. One minute you’re awe-struck by the beautiful landscapes and mystical creatures, and the next, you’re biting your nails as Xu Xian finds himself in yet another pickle. 🥒 The love story is heart-wrenching, with Bai Suzhen’s struggle to maintain her human form and Xu Xian’s innocent obliviousness to her true nature.

Now, let’s talk about the fantasy elements because, hello, that’s my jam! 🍯 The film does not hold back. We’ve got magical battles, transformations, potions, and a glimpse into mythical worlds. It’s like the director took every cool fantasy trope and mixed it into one epic smoothie. 🍹

There are some hilarious moments too. Like, there’s a scene where Xu Xian is utterly baffled by Bai Suzhen’s supernatural antics, and his reaction is just priceless. 😂 The balance of humor and drama in this film is chef’s kiss. 👌

In short, “The Sorcerer and the White Snake” is a fantastic journey through a world where legends come to life. It’s a treat for fantasy lovers like me, and if you’re into films that blend romance, action, and a dash of humor, you’ve got to check this one out. 🌟

Till next time, keep dreaming and streaming! 🎥💤

Catch ya tomorrow, movie stars! 🌟👋

Movie-a-Day Challenge: Words on Bathroom Walls

A Journey into the Mind and Heart”

Hey there, awesome people!

🌟 I just finished watching “Words on Bathroom Walls,” directed by the talented Thor Freudenthal, and I’ve got to spill some thoughts! Grab your favorite snack, and let’s dive in. 🍪

The film introduces us to Adam, played by the remarkable Charlie Plummer whose world turns upside down when he’s diagnosed with schizophrenia. The portrayal of Adam’s journey is both poignant and eye-opening, with his inner battles and hallucinations brought to life in a way that’s both heart-wrenching and enlightening. Charlie Plummer, who plays Adam, absolutely nails the role, bringing a depth and vulnerability that had me rooting for him from the get-go.

Adam’s life takes another turn when he enrolls in a new school and meets Maya, a brilliant spark of light portrayed by Taylor Russell. Their connection is instant and electrifying. Their chemistry? Off the charts! 😍 Maya becomes a beacon of hope in Adam’s turbulent life, showing him that his diagnosis doesn’t define him. The way their relationship evolves is both sweet and realistic, steering clear of the cliché ‘love cures all’ trope.

But here’s the catch – Adam decides to keep his illness a secret from Maya. This added layer of secrecy brings a whole new dimension to the film, showcasing the stigma and fear associated with mental illness. Watching Adam struggle with the decision to hide this significant part of his life from Maya adds an intense, emotional depth to their relationship. 🤫💔

I really liked was how the film doesn’t just stop at portraying mental illness; it dives deep into the complexities of hiding it, especially from those we care about. This secret becomes a pivotal part of the plot, creating tension and empathy in equal measure. It’s a delicate balance that the film strikes beautifully.

What also really struck a chord with me was how the film didn’t shy away from the realities of mental illness. It’s raw, honest, and sometimes uncomfortable, but that’s what makes it so powerful. The hallucinations Adam experiences are depicted with such creativity and insight, providing a window into his mind that’s both fascinating and harrowing.

But fear not, it’s not all heavy! The chemistry between Adam and Maya provides moments of sweetness and light in the darkness, steering clear of the ‘love cures all’ cliché, which I totally appreciate. 🙌

The supporting cast deserves a shoutout too! Andy Garcia plays a compassionate priest who becomes a mentor to Adam, and his performance adds another layer of warmth to the story. 🌟. And the cinematography is stunning, blending the lines between Adam’s reality and hallucinations in a way that’s both artistic and deeply meaningful. 🎨

So, wrapping up, “Words on Bathroom Walls” is a gem, IMHO. It’s a film that tackles tough topics with grace, creativity, and a sprinkle of humor. The portrayal of Adam’s secret struggle with his mental illness adds a poignant layer to this already moving story. It’s an emotional ride that educates, entertains, and, most importantly, resonates long after the credits roll. 🌈

I really loved this one!❤️

Until the next movie adventure, 🎥
Roger
