Hot tub time machine movie imageHot Tub Time Machine’: A Surprisingly Awesome Blast from the Past 🕒🛁”

Hey there, friends!

So, I finally got around to watching “Hot Tub Time Machine,” and let me tell you, it was a trip (pun totally intended)! I mean, with a title like that, you’ve got to wonder what you’re getting yourself into, right? But honestly, it was way better than I expected. 🎉

The plot is this wild mishmash of nostalgia and absurdity that somehow works. Picture this: four guys, stuck in various ruts in their lives, get whisked back to the 1980s via, you guessed it, a hot tub. It sounds like a joke your uncle would make after a few beers, but trust me, it’s comedy gold.

John Cusack, Rob Corddry, Craig Robinson, and Clark Duke – these dudes are hilarious together. They have this chemistry that just clicks, like they’ve been buddies forever. Cusack, with his classic ‘I’m too old for this’ vibe, plays the straight man to Corddry’s over-the-top antics. And Robinson? Man, his deadpan humor had me in stitches. Duke, the youngest of the bunch, is like this adorably clueless puppy you just wanna protect.

The 80s setting is a character in itself. The neon, the hair, the music – it’s like a love letter to the era, but with a cheeky wink. It’s like the movie is saying, “Remember this? Wasn’t it ridiculous? But also kind of awesome?” I mean, the outfits alone are a sight to behold. 🕺

But here’s the thing – amidst all the laugh-out-loud moments (and there are plenty), there’s this undercurrent of heart. It’s about these guys confronting their pasts, their regrets, and it hits you right in the feels. You start off laughing at their misadventures and end up kinda rooting for them. It’s weirdly heartwarming.

I gotta say, the humor isn’t for everyone. It’s a bit raunchy, a bit ridiculous, and doesn’t take itself too seriously. But that’s the charm of it. It’s like that friend who’s always cracking jokes – sometimes they’re a hit, sometimes they miss, but you love them anyway.

And the cameos! Chevy Chase pops in as this mysterious repairman, and it’s just… perfection. His deadpan delivery is on point.

Honestly, I didn’t think I’d like it as much as I did. I figured it’d be one of those movies you watch once and forget. But nope, this one’s sticking with me. It’s like a good song from the 80s – kinda cheesy, but undeniably catchy.

A random fact that blew my mind: the term “hot tub” dates back to 1940, when the Jacuzzi brothers immigrated to the U.S. from Italy and eventually created a hydrotherapy pump for bathtubs. That’s right, the hot tub is an Italian-American invention! (Source: History of the Jacuzzi Brand)

If you’re in the mood for a laugh and a dose of nostalgia, give “Hot Tub Time Machine” a whirl. It’s like a cozy, funny blanket made of memories and jokes. And who knows, you might end up loving it as much as I did.

Catch you tomorrow,
Roger 🌟

Movie-a-Day Challenge: Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe

’Chillin’ with ‘Aristotle and Dante’ 😎🎬”

Hey there, friends!

So, I finally got around to watching “Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe,” and let me tell you, it’s like a breath of fresh air in a room that’s been stuffy for way too long. Directed by the talented Aitch Alberto, this film is a heartfelt journey that’s as colorful and vibrant as the book it’s based on. Yep, it’s one of those book-to-movie adaptations, and guess what? They actually did a pretty decent job!

The story dives into the lives of two teenagers, Aristotle and Dante, who are as different as chalk and cheese. Aristotle, played by the dreamy Max Pelayo, is this introspective guy, kinda broody with suppressed angst but in a cool, mysterious way. Then there’s Dante, brought to life by the charming Reese Gonzales. Dante’s this free spirit, an open book with a smile that could light up the darkest corners of your soul. He’s is a whirlwind of infectious curiosity and unapologetic self-expression. Ari and Dante’s chemistry? Absolutely electric! You know, the kind that makes you go, “Ah, to be young and figuring stuff out again…”

Set in the 1980s, their worlds collide at the local pool, and let me tell you, it’s not your typical chlorine-scented meet-cute. Dante, ever the philosopher (seriously, this kid drops Nietzsche quotes like confetti), drags Ari on a journey of self-discovery that’s equal parts hilarious and heartbreaking. They explore art, poetry, music, and, of course, the vast, confusing universe within themselves. There’s first love, awkward fumbling, family drama that packs a punch, and friendships that crackle with raw honesty.

It’s like watching a flower bloom in slow motion – beautiful, a bit awkward, but totally mesmerizing. The film captures the essence of growing up, dealing with family expectations, and the the wild, unpredictable journey of finding your identity.

And the humor, oh the humor! It’s not your slapstick kind but more like those small, everyday moments that make you chuckle. Like, there’s this scene where Aristotle tries to impress Dante, and it’s so adorably clumsy, you can’t help but laugh and go, “Been there, buddy.”

The cinematography? Stunning. It’s like every frame is a painting, with colors that pop and set the mood just right. There’s this one scene at sunset that’s so gorgeous, I swear I could hear my heart singing.

But what really got to me were the emotions. This film doesn’t just scratch the surface; it dives deep. It’s raw, real, and sometimes, a little too close to home. You know, that feeling when you’re holding back tears in a room full of people? Yeah, that.

Here’s a fun fact for you: Did you know that the book this movie is based on won several awards, including the Stonewall Book Award for its portrayal of the LGBTQ+ experience? Pretty cool, right?

In short, “Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe” is more than just a movie — it’s an experience, a journey through the ups and downs of adolescence, friendship, and love. It’s a reminder that sometimes, the most significant discoveries are the ones we make about ourselves.

So, if you’re looking for a movie that will make you laugh, cry, and maybe even call your mom to tell her you love her (no judgment!), do yourself a favor and check out “Aristotle and Dante.” Trust me, it’s worth every minute. Just bring tissues, a supportive bestie, and maybe a box of Kleenex-brand tissues, because those generic ones are scratchy and honestly, disrespectful to the emotional rollercoaster you’re about to embark on.

Until next time, keep it real and remember, the universe might be full of secrets, but friendship and love are the constellations that guide us home. 😊🌌

Peace out,

Roger ✨

Hey friends! 👋

So, I finally got around to watching “Wild Oats,” and let me tell you, it’s a hoot! 🤣 Directed by Andy Tennant, who’s known for some fun flicks, this one stars the fabulous Shirley MacLaine and Jessica Lange. Trust me, these two are like the dynamic duo of comedy in this film!

The plot? Oh, it’s a doozy! MacLaine’s character, Eva, receives a life insurance check mistakenly made out for $5,000,000 instead of $50,000. Talk about a bank error in your favor, am I right? 🏦💰 Then, in a “why the heck not?” moment, she and her bestie, played by Lange, jet off to the Canary Islands for the spree of a lifetime. It’s like every retiree’s secret dream, and boy, does it spiral into some crazy adventures!

Now, let’s chat about MacLaine and Lange. Shirley MacLaine is just a powerhouse, bringing this quirky, life-embracing energy to Eva. She’s got this “I’m old, not dead” vibe that’s just infectious. And Jessica Lange, as the slightly more cautious but equally spirited Maddie, is the perfect counterbalance. Their chemistry? Off the charts! Like, imagine your grandma and her BFF accidentally becoming millionaires and going wild – it’s that level of fun.

But it’s not just laughs. The film has its tender moments, too, like when Eva and Maddie reflect on their lives and choices. It’s sweet and a bit melancholic, but then they’re off to the next zany scenario, keeping the vibe light and airy.

Let’s talk aesthetics for a sec. The Canary Islands serve as a stunning backdrop, making me want to pack my bags and go find my own adventure (or at least a really good piña colada 🍹). The whole film has this vibrant, sun-soaked feel that’s like a mini vacation for your eyes.

And here’s a fun fact for you: Did you know Shirley MacLaine is an Oscar winner and has been in the biz since the 1950s? Talk about a legend! 🌟

So yeah, “Wild Oats” is a blast. It’s not just a movie; it’s a reminder to embrace life, no matter your age. MacLaine and Lange are delightful, the story is a wild ride and it’s just the kind of film that leaves you with a big, goofy grin.

Stay awesome and keep laughing,
Roger

P.S. Don’t forget to check your bank statements; you never know when a few extra zeros might pop up! 😉💸

Movie-a-Day Challenge: Asteroid City

Hey there, friends!

So, I just finished watching Wes Anderson’s latest masterpiece, “Asteroid City,” and oh boy, do I have thoughts! First off, let me just say, Wes Anderson is like that weird, artsy uncle you can’t help but adore. His movies are this beautiful blend of eccentricity and meticulous detail, and “Asteroid City” is no exception. I mean, the guy’s got an eye for style that’s as unique as a zebra in a horse race. 🦓

The plot? It’s classic Anderson – a bit quirky, somewhat whimsical, and totally out-of-the-box. Picture this: a small, dusty town in the American Southwest during the 1950s, buzzing with the excitement of the Junior Stargazer/Space Cadet convention. It’s like a scene straight out of a retro sci-fi comic book, with kids and adults alike geeking out over astronomy and space. The town, Asteroid City, becomes a melting pot of quirky characters, each with their own peculiarities and dreams.

But then, as is typical in Anderson’s universe, the unexpected happens. A strange astronomical event occurs, and suddenly, the town’s cut off from the rest of the world. It’s like the universe decided to play a cosmic prank on them. The characters, ranging from a brilliant scientist to a charismatic cowboy, are thrown into a whirlwind of bizarre, yet strangely relatable, situations. It’s like watching a dream where everything makes sense and nothing does, all at the same time.

The film’s aesthetic is a feast for the eyes. It’s like stepping into a vintage postcard sprinkled with a dash of surrealism. The colors pop like bubblegum on a summer day, and the attention to detail in every frame is mind-blowing. It’s as if Anderson is whispering, “Hey, look at how much I care about the little things.” And trust me, we’re all ears (and eyes).

One thing I adore about Anderson’s films is how they feel like a warm, slightly odd, hug. “Asteroid City” has its moments of laugh-out-loud humor, tender sentimentality, and just plain weirdness – a combo that somehow works like avocado on toast. Delicious, but you wouldn’t have thought of it.

As for the sensory experience, the film is a smorgasbord. The soundtrack is a quirky mix that perfectly complements the on-screen action and the dialogue is snappy and witty, with lines that’ll stick with you like a catchy tune.

Here’s a fun fact: Did you know that Wes Anderson often uses miniatures and hand-made sets to create his unique visual style? It’s like he’s a master chef, carefully selecting each ingredient to create the perfect dish.

To wrap this up (because all good things must come to an end), “Asteroid City” is a trip worth taking, especially if you’re a Wes Anderson fan and love weird movies. It’s a film that stays with you, like that one summer you’ll never forget. So, sink into a comfy seat and let Wes Anderson take you on a journey you didn’t know you needed. I think this is also a film you’ll want to watch more than once because there are so many little things going on that are easy to miss the first time through.

Until next time, keep it quirky and a little bit weird, just like “Asteroid City”! 🌠

Peace out,
Roger 🎬✨

Movie-a-Day Challenge: Wonka

Hey there, friends! 🍫

Get ready for a sugar-spun odyssey into the world of Willy Wonka! 🎩 Remember that scrumptious 1971 film that haunted our childhood chocoholic dreams? Well, buckle up, because 2023’s “Wonka,” directed by the fantastic Paul King (of “Paddington” fame!), is here to spin that magical candy wheel once more, this time with the ever-charming Timothée Chalamet at the helm as a young, pre-chocolate-factory Willy Wonka. ⚙️ This movie took me on a whimsical journey that I just have to share with you all.

First off, the plot! It’s like diving into a giant, colorful bowl of candy – sweet, a bit nutty, and totally mesmerizing. The film explores the origins of the enigmatic Willy Wonka, played by Chalamet, and how he became the quirky chocolate genius we all know (and secretly wish we could be). There’s this whole backstory about his adventures and misadventures, meeting the Oompa-Loompas, and his inspiration for the chocolate factory. It’s like watching a chocolate cake recipe unfold, but with more singing and dancing. 🕺

Speaking of dancing, Timothée Chalamet – oh my gosh, can we talk about him? He’s not just a pretty face (though that face could make even a bag of gummy bears jealous). His portrayal of Wonka is just… chef’s kiss. He brings this youthful energy and vulnerability to the character that’s both refreshing and deeply engaging. Plus, his singing and dancing skills? Who knew our boy had such moves!

And the supporting cast? They’re like the perfect toppings on a sundae. Each character adds their own unique flavor to the story, making it richer and more delightful. The interactions and chemistry between them are just so enjoyable to watch. It’s like they’re all ingredients in Wonka’s magical chocolate bar, blending together perfectly.

The visuals, oh, you guys, the visuals! It’s like stepping into a painting that’s been splashed with every color in the rainbow. The sets, the costumes, the special effects – they’re all so whimsically stunning. It’s a feast for the eyes, just like Wonka’s factory is a feast for the taste buds. 🌈🍭

Now, let’s get a bit real here. Not everything in the movie was a smooth ride on the chocolate river. Some parts felt a bit stretched, like caramel, but maybe not as sweet. However, these moments were few and far between, and honestly, the rest of the movie more than made up for it.

One thing that really stood out to me was the music. It’s like the cherry on top of this delicious Wonka sundae. The songs are catchy, fun, and they just stick in your head. I caught myself humming them long after the movie ended.

Okay, here’s a random true fact to sprinkle in: Did you know that the original Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory movie from 1971 had a budget of just $3 million? Crazy, right? Especially when you see the grandeur of this new one!

So yeah, “Wonka” is a delightful, whimsical, and visually stunning film that both honors and expands the Willy Wonka legacy. It’s like a trip down memory lane, but with a fresh, new twist. Timothée Chalamet shines as Wonka, and the entire cast just brings this sweet, sweet story to life.

So, would I recommend it? Absolutely! Head on out to your local theater and dive into this magical world. It’s a treat for the senses and a reminder of the joy and wonder that movies can bring.

Catch you on the flip side,
Roger🍫✨

Don’t Get Left in the Digital Dust: Why Keeping Up with Tech Matters!

guy with a vr headset

Today, let’s have a cozy chat about why it’s super important to keep up with technology. Given how quickly technology changes these days, I thought this would be a relevant topic for discussion. I know many people find it challenging to try to keep up with tech and sometimes think it would be easier to give up.  But I’m here to tell you the opposite — that keeping up with tech is super important.

You know that feeling when you’re trying to figure out how to use your new-fangled smartTV, and it might as well be a spaceship control panel? Yeah, been there, done that, and let me tell you, it’s not fun. Trust me, you don’t want to be that person who’s stuck in a state of perpetual confusion because you don’t understand everyday technology. Let’s face it; we live in a digital age, and tech is everywhere. From smartphones to smart homes, from streaming to social media, it’s all around us.

Now, I’m not saying you need to be a tech guru or an expert coder (unless you want to be, of course). But a basic understanding of technology is becoming as essential as knowing how to tie your shoelaces (or maybe even more so). Here are a few reasons why:

  1. Communication: Most of our communication these days happens online. Whether it’s texting, emailing, or video chatting with loved ones, technology is the glue that keeps us connected. Don’t want to be the friend who can’t join the Zoom call because you can’t figure out how to unmute yourself, right?
  2. Work: In the job market, tech skills are in high demand. Whether you’re a doctor, a chef, or an astronaut (okay, maybe not an astronaut), chances are you’ll need to use technology in your work. Plus, understanding tech can make you more efficient and competitive in your career.
  3. Everyday Life: From online shopping to banking to ordering food, technology makes our daily lives easier. Keeping up with it can save you time, money, and a whole lot of hassle.
  4. Not Getting Left Behind: In this digital era, not keeping pace with technology can mean getting left behind. As technology evolves, so does the way society functions. Whether it’s the job market, education, or daily interactions, everything is becoming more tech-centric. Staying updated prevents us from becoming obsolete in our skills and understanding of the world. For me, it is important not to be bumbling around the world in a state of confusion because I didn’t bother to try and understand everyday technology.
  5. Staying Safe & Secure: With the rise in digital technology, there’s also an increase in cyber threats. Understanding the latest in tech means you’re better equipped to protect yourself against cyberattacks and data breaches. Knowledge about things like secure passwords, two-factor authentication, and data encryption is super important.
  6. Making Informed Decisions: When you’re up-to-date with technology, you can make more informed decisions about the tech products and services you use. This knowledge can save you money (no more buying tech you don’t need!) and improve your overall experience with technology.
  7. Never Stop Learning: Finally, keeping up with technology is a continuous learning process. It keeps your mind active and engaged, and there’s always something new to discover. Whether it’s a new app, a software update, or a groundbreaking gadget, the tech world is constantly evolving, offering endless opportunities to learn and grow.

So what’s the secret?

For someone who isn’t tech-savvy, keeping up with technology can seem daunting. Heck, it’s even exhausting for those of us who enjoy tech. However, there are several accessible ways to gradually increase your understanding and comfort with new tech:

  • Start with Basic Online Tutorials: Look for beginner-friendly tutorials on platforms like YouTube or Khan Academy. They often have step-by-step guides on various tech topics, explained in simple terms.
  • Use Simplified Tech News Sources: Websites like Digital Trends or Tech for Luddites offer technology news and information in an easy-to-understand format, avoiding overly technical jargon.
  • Enroll in Introductory Tech Courses: Websites like Coursera, Udemy, or your local community college offer beginner courses in computer literacy, internet basics, and introductory courses in various software.
  • Leverage Interactive Learning Tools: Tools like Duolingo for languages or Codecademy for coding offer interactive, user-friendly ways to learn at your own pace, often starting from a very basic level.
  • Join Beginner-Friendly Tech Communities: Online forums or local clubs for beginners can provide a supportive environment for learning and asking questions. Platforms like Meetup can help you find local groups.
  • Explore Technology in Public Libraries: Many public libraries offer free access to computers and basic computer classes, as well as resources like books and online materials for learning about technology.
  • Ask for Help from Family and Friends: If you have family members or friends who are more tech-savvy, ask them for guidance or to explain things in a way that makes sense to you.
  • Use Technology in Daily Life: Incorporate technology into your daily activities, like using a smartphone for tasks like shopping or navigation, which can help you get comfortable with tech in a practical, hands-on way.
  • Set Small, Achievable Goals: Start with small goals, like learning to send an email, using a new app, or understanding how to protect your online privacy.
  • Stay Patient and Persistent: Remember that technology is a vast field and it’s normal to feel overwhelmed. Take it one step at a time and celebrate small victories in your learning journey.
  • Read Tech Blogs: Well, I’m a big fan of tech blogs! I subscribe to several of them and make it a point to read them daily. These blogs are like my tech-savvy friends who keep me in the know about the latest gadgets, software updates, and tech trends. They break down complex tech jargon into everyday language, so even tech newbies can grasp the concepts.

By starting with the basics and gradually building up your skills, you can become more comfortable and confident in navigating the ever-changing world of technology.

So, the bottom line is this: Don’t let technology pass you by. Embrace it, learn from it, and use it to your advantage. Subscribe to a few tech blogs, follow tech influencers on social media, or join online tech forums to stay informed. It’s not about being a tech wizard; it’s about staying engaged with the world around you.

As technology continues to evolve at lightning speed, you don’t want to amble about in a state of confusion. Instead, be the person who confidently navigates the digital landscape, adapts to new tech effortlessly, and can impress their friends with their tech-savvy prowess. Who knows, you might even find that you enjoy it! So, stay curious, stay connected, and stay tech-savvy, my friends. 🚀📱💻

Movie-a-Day Challenge: Totally Killer

This post is part of my movie-a-day challenge in which I will watch a film every day for 365 days. Today is Day 43. You can see all the posts for this challenge HERE To see the original Movie-a-Day Challenge post, click HERE.

‘Totally Killer’ – A Wild Blast from the Past 🕹️🎥”

Totally Killer movie imageHey movie lovers! 🎬✨

Today We’re diving into “Totally Killer,” the new flick with enough 80s nostalgia to make your mom break out the leg warmers and dust off the VHS player.

First things first, let’s gab about the plot because it’s a doozy. Picture this: the notorious “Sweet Sixteen Killer” is back on the prowl 35 years after his first chilling murder spree, leaving a fresh body and a whole lot of freaked-out teenagers in his wake. And who’s caught in this time-twisting, hair-raising mess? Our main gal, 17-year-old Jamie, played by the ever-so-talented Kiernan Shipkam (remember Sabrina the sassy witch?).

But this ain’t your average whodunit. Cue the time travel twist (because every good 80s movie needs one, duh!), and Jamie gets zapped back to 1987, the era of neon everything, hairspray that could hold a spaceship together, and questionable fashion choices. ✨ Talk about culture shock! Imagine a goth queen navigating a world of pastel scrunchies and acid-washed jeans.

And Jamie’s mission? To put a stop to the killer before he can start his gruesome spree. Talk about a high school project!

Kiernan Shipka totally rocks her role. She brings this blend of vulnerability and badassery that’s near perfect. Her performance? Spot on! She’s like Nancy Drew if Nancy had to deal with time travel and a psycho killer on the loose.

Now, let’s talk setting because the ’80s throwback is REAL. The movie nails the aesthetic, from the music (hello, retro jams!) to the outfits (I’m eyeing those legwarmers, not gonna lie). And the attention to detail? Impeccable. It’s like a love letter to the era but with a modern twist.

But, and there’s always a but, right? Some parts of the movie felt a tad predictable. Like, you could sometimes guess what was going to happen next. And a few ’80s references might go whoosh over the heads of the Gen Z crowd. But hey, no movie’s perfect!

But “Totally Killer” is more than just outrageous gags and shoulder-pad shenanigans. It’s a story about friendship, loyalty, and facing your fears, even if those fears involve, you guessed it, a masked killer with a very sharp knife. This film’s got laughs, heart, and some genuinely touching moments.

So, if you’re into thrillers with a twist, amazing performances, and a trip down memory lane, then “Totally Killer” is your jam.

Random fact: Did you know that the director chose to shoot some scenes using actual ’80s vintage lenses to give it that authentic feel? How cool is that?

Catch ya on the flip side,
Roger 🍿🌟
