Movie-a-Day Challenge: Barbie

“Barbie’s Big Screen Bonanza: A Rollercoaster of Pink, Fun & Fabulousness 🌟”

So, initially, I had ZERO plans to see the “Barbie” film, directed by Greta Gerwig. I mean, come on, a movie about a doll? I thought it wasn’t really my cup of tea. 🤷‍♂️☕ But, plot twist! After several friends, whose opinions are like gold to me, raved about how surprisingly awesome it was, I caved and decided to take the plunge. And boy, am I glad I did! It’s as fabulous as a high-heel on a runway! 🌈👠

The plot is a kaleidoscope of color and drama. Barbie, brought to life by the incredible Margot Robbie, is not just a doll in a box. She’s living in a world that’s a cross between a cotton candy dream and a pop music video – think glitter, pink, and fabulousness overload! We’re talking pink houses, dreamy cars, and outfits that make you rethink your entire wardrobe. But wait, there’s a twist – Barbie starts questioning her perfect plastic life and embarks on an adventure to discover what’s beyond her sparkly world. It’s like ‘Alice in Wonderland’ meets ‘The Devil Wears Prada’, but with more pink. 💖👗

Ryan Gosling as Ken is just… chef’s kiss! 😘 He’s more than just a pretty face with impeccably styled hair and abs for days; he brings humor, depth, and some seriously good dance moves. Watching him and Robbie together is like seeing the king and queen of Prom Night – but cooler.

The humor? Think of it as a blend of witty one-liners, slapstick scenarios, satirical jabs at pop culture, and scenes so absurd you can’t help but laugh. There’s this one bit where Barbie tries to be ‘normal’ in the real world, and let’s just say, she sticks out like a tiara at a football game. 🤣👑

But it’s not all laughs and pink convertibles. The film delves deep into themes of identity, societal expectations, and the pressure to be perfect. It’s a clever satire on our culture’s obsession with appearances and the idea that being ‘flawless’ is the only way to be valued. Deep stuff, right?

The supporting cast is like the perfect ensemble of friends – each adding their unique sparkle to the plot. We’ve got the hilarious Will Ferrell as the CEO of a toy company, who absolutely nails the role of a comically out-of-touch exec.

Visually, “Barbie” is a spectacle. The costumes, the sets, the vibrant colors – it’s like stepping into a daydream designed by Barbie herself. The cinematography is so bright and bubbly; you might need sunglasses. 🕶️🌞

In summary, “Barbie” is not just a trip down memory lane; it’s a smart, funny, and visually stunning movie that’s about finding your true self in a superficial world. A total must-see for anyone who’s ever believed in the magic of Barbie – or just loves a good, cheeky comedy.

Catch you tomorrow! 👋

Why Worrying About Messing Up is the Biggest Mess-Up

Photo by Francisco De Legarreta C

Hey folks!

So, I stumbled upon a quote by Elbert Hubbard that kinda slapped me across the face with its truth-bomb so I thought I’d share some of my thoughts on it with you. The quote goes like this:

“The greatest mistake you can make in life is to be continually fearing you will make a mistake.”

And man, oh man, does that hit close to home or what?

We’ve all been there, right? Tiptoeing around, trying not to trip up and face-plant into a big ol’ pile of mistakes. But here’s the kicker – getting all caught up in the what-ifs and the oh-noes is basically like walking around with a “I’m gonna goof up” sign hanging over our heads.

Let’s break it down. When you’re so busy worrying about screwing up, you’re not really living. You’re just… existing. Kinda like when you’re too scared to text someone because you might say the wrong thing. Or when you don’t try that new taco place because you might not like it and feel like you wasted your meal. Sounds familiar, huh?

I’ve been thinking about what good ol’ Hubbard meant, and here’s the deal: Life’s about taking those weird, wild, and wacky turns. It’s about trying that hot sauce that could either be the best thing ever or a one-way ticket to Heartburn City. It’s about sending that text, because hey, the person on the other end might just be as weird as you.

The reality is, mistakes are gonna happen. They’re like those annoying subscription emails – no matter what, they find a way into your inbox. But here’s the twist – they’re not just junk. Mistakes are the spam that teaches you how to use the “unsubscribe” link. They’re the real MVPs in the game of life, coaching you to be better, smarter, and maybe even a little bit braver.

So here’s what I’m proposing: Let’s not let the fear of messing up keep us from playing the game. Let’s not be the person who never knows the glorious taste of victory (or the best dang tacos in town) because we never stepped up to the plate. Let’s be the person who wears their mistakes like badges of honor – because that means we were in the game, swinging, running, and living.

Remember, the only real flub is letting the fear of flubs keep you from doing your thing.

Now go out there, text that person, try that taco, and live like Hubbard’s watching and nodding his head, saying, “Yep, you got it.”

Okay…Roger and out!

Movie-a-Day Challenge: The Haunting of the Queen Mary

This post is part of my movie-a-day challenge in which I will watch a film every day for 365 days. You can see all the posts for this challenge HERE

All Aboard the Confusion Express!

So, last night I decided to dive into the 2023 horror flick “The Haunting of the Queen Mary,” directed by Gary Shore, and let me tell you, it was quite a ride… albeit a bumpy one. Imagine embarking on a ghost ship expecting a thrilling adventure, but instead, you find yourself in a maze of convoluted plotlines. That’s pretty much what watching this movie felt like.

The plot? Oh boy, where to start. So picture this: two storylines that are supposed to intertwine but instead end up playing a game of tag. On one side, you have a group of eager explorers, all jazzed up to investigate the spooky legends of the haunted Queen Mary ship. This part had so much potential – eerie corridors, mysterious shadows, the whole spooky ship vibe. It felt like we were in for a classic ghost story! 🚢👻

Sounds cool, right? But wait, plot twist! Simultaneously, there’s this whole other subplot going on about a vengeful ghost with a murky past tied to the ship. Just when you think you’re getting the hang of one story, whoosh, you’re thrown into the other! 😵

The plot jumps back and forth between these storylines, making it feel like you’re watching two different movies at once. Talk about confusing! The transitions are so abrupt, it’s like riding a haunted rollercoaster in the dark — you never know what twist or turn is coming next! 😵‍💫

Honestly, it felt like trying to solve a puzzle with half the pieces missing. I was all geared up for some serious spine-tingling chills, but instead, I found myself scratching my head, trying to piece together the story.

But hey, it wasn’t all a stormy sea — the movie does have its moments. The cinematography? Stunning! The visuals were like a lighthouse in the fog of the storyline. The eerie lighting and the way the camera played with shadows aboard the legendary Queen Mary were actually quite captivating— it was captured so beautifully, it almost made up for the tangled plot. Almost. 🎥✨

In a nutshell, while I was super pumped for a good scare, “The Haunting of the Queen Mary” was more of a confusing whirlwind than a horror masterpiece. But if you’re into movies that leave you more puzzled than petrified, and you dig some gorgeous cinematography set on a creepy old ship, it might just float your boat! ⛵️

Catch ya tomorrow for more movie musings! Keep exploring those movies – the great, the not-so-great, and the and the ‘what did I just watch?’ ones!

Stay spooky and happy movie watching! 🍿👋

Cheers,
Roger 🌟

Movie-a-Day Challenge: Limitless

This post is part of my movie-a-day challenge in which I will watch a film every day for 365 days. You can see all the posts for this challenge HERE

Can you believe it? I’m almost a month into my epic movie-a-day challenge, and oh boy, it’s been a rollercoaster of reels! 🎥🎢 Each day, I dive into a new world, and it’s like having a daily ticket to adventure. From laughing out loud to shedding a tear or two, it’s been a buffet of emotions.

So, about yesterday’s pick: “Limitless,” directed by Neil Burger. The film, released in 2011, is like a turbo-charged brain teaser that had me glued to my seat.

So picture this: Bradley Cooper (😍) plays Eddie Morra, a struggling writer with a mop of hair that’s as messy as his life. Then, bam! He gets his hands on this crazy pill, NZT-48, which basically turns his brain into a supercomputer. I mean, who wouldn’t want that, right? He goes from zero to hero, crushing writer’s block, learning languages faster than Google Translate and playing the stock market like it’s child’s play. Bradley Cooper? More like Bradley Super-Cooper in this one!

The way Cooper portrays Eddie’s transformation is just mesmerizing. From a lost puppy to a Wall Street wolf, he absolutely nails it! I’ve always had a thing for Bradley Cooper (who doesn’t?), but in this film, he’s not just a pretty face; he’s got acting chops that shine brighter than my phone screen at 2 AM.

Plot-wise, “Limitless” is as twisty as a pretzel. Just when you think you’ve got it figured out, it zigs where you expect it to zag. It’s the kind of film that keeps your brain on its toes – or… well, you get what I mean. 🤯

But hey, it’s not all brain and no heart. There’s this underlying message about how we use our potential and the lengths we’ll go to for success. It’s deep, guys.

But here’s the real kicker – each movie in my movie-a-day challenge has been an escape hatch into a new universe, and “Limitless” was no exception. It’s more than just entertainment; it’s a daily dose of ‘what if?’ wrapped in cinematic glory. Almost a month in, and I’ve seen some fantastic films, but this one? It’s definitely up there!

In short, “Limitless” is a must-watch if you’re into films that make your brain do somersaults while feasting your eyes on Bradley Cooper’s charm. It’s a wild ride that makes you wonder what you’d do with limitless brain power. Spoiler: I’d probably just use it to never forget where I left my keys. 🗝️

So, stay tuned for more of my movie marathon chronicles. Who knows what cinematic gem I’ll unearth next?

Catch you at the next screening!

Peace out,
Roger 🌟

Movie-a-Day Challenge: Failure to Launch

Failure to launch

This post is part of my movie-a-day challenge in which I will watch a film every day for 365 days. You can see all the posts for this challenge HERE

Hey friends — and fellow movie lovers! 👋

Ever wonder what happens when you mix a 35-year-old guy living with his parents, a woman hired to boot him out, and a bunch of wild animals? Well, look no further than the 2006 comedy, “Failure to Launch,” directed by Tom Dey. It’s like a sitcom and a wildlife documentary had a quirky baby. 😂

The film’s centerpiece, Tripp (played by the ever-charming Matthew McConaughey), is comfortably nested at his parents’ home. Enter Paula (Sarah Jessica Parker), the professional heart-breaker (literally her job is to make guys fall for her and then want to move out) hired by his parents to… well, kick him out. Talk about a unique career choice, right?. The concept is so bizarre, it’s brilliant. 🤯

What makes this movie a comedy gem is the sheer absurdity of its situations. You’ve got Tripp being attacked by a chipmunk, a dolphin, and even a lizard at the most inopportune moments. It’s like nature’s way of saying, “Dude, time to get your own place.” 🐿️🐬🦎

Then there’s the supporting cast, who are basically the comedy ninjas of the film. Zooey Deschanel as Paula’s roommate is a scene-stealer with her deadpan humor and obsession with a mockingbird that won’t let her sleep. Bradley Cooper and Justin Bartha play Tripp’s buddies, and their banter is like the cherry on this comedic sundae. 🍒

The humor is a mix of slapstick, witty one-liners, and those “did that just really happen?” moments. It’s not just the story of a man-child learning to adult; it’s a parade of ridiculous scenarios that you can’t help but laugh at. Each scene ups the ante in the “What the heck?” department. 🎭

Sure, “Failure to Launch” isn’t going to win any awards for groundbreaking cinema. But it’s the kind of movie that makes you laugh out loud because of its sheer, unapologetic silliness. It’s the perfect flick for when you just want to unwind and not take anything seriously. 🛋️

So, do I recommend it? For a light-hearted, don’t-think-too-hard-about-it movie night, absolutely! Just grab some snacks, leave logic at the door, and enjoy the ridiculous ride. It’s like a comfort blanket woven with chuckles and guffaws. 🎬

Catch you tomorrow, movie lovers! Keep it reel and keep laughing! 🎥

Cheers,
Roger 🌟

Movie-a-Day Challenge: Of An Age

Of an age

This post is part of my movie-a-day challenge in which I will watch a film every day for 365 days. You can see all the posts for this challenge HERE

Hey there, friends! It’s time for another cinematic adventure. 🎬

So, I just finished watching “Of An Age,” directed by the one and only Goran Stolevski, and let me tell you, it’s a wild ride through the emotional rollercoaster that is the summer of 1999. Spoiler alert – I’m about to dive deep into the plot, so if you haven’t seen it yet, consider this your warning! 🚨

Picture this: It’s Melbourne, Australia, 1999 – a time when boy bands ruled the airwaves, and the Y2K scare was a real thing (I mean, were computers really going to end the world? 😂) We’ve got this 17-year-old Serbian ballroom dancer, Kol (played by Elias Anton), who’s just living his life, you know, doing the dance thing. But then, BAM! His brother’s best friend, Adam (hello, Thom Green!), comes into the picture, and suddenly we’re in a whirlwind of young love and heartache. Talk about a plot twist!

The beauty of this film is how it captures that crazy, confusing, and totally exhilarating feeling of first love. The chemistry between Kol and Adam? It’s like watching fireworks on a hot summer night – absolutely dazzling and a bit unexpected. 🎆.

The film does this amazing thing where it captures the essence of first love and the heartache of unrequited feelings. You’re rooting for Kol and Ebony, but at the same time, you’re like, “Oh boy, this is gonna be a bumpy ride.” And it is! There’s this intense scene after a party where they finally confront their feelings, and I’m not ashamed to admit, I might have teared up a bit. 😢

What I absolutely adore about this film is its raw honesty. It’s not just a love story; it’s a coming-of-age tale that delves into themes of identity, cultural differences, and the bittersweet nature of growing up. Stolevski does a phenomenal job of painting this vivid picture of 90s Australia, complete with all the nostalgia (those fashion choices, am I right?).

Now, for some real talk – the film has its bittersweet moments. It’s not all sunshine and rainbows, but that’s what makes it relatable, right? It’s a raw and honest depiction of how complicated and messy love can be, especially when you’re just figuring yourself out. And while the film has its ‘wow’ moments, there are parts where it kind of drags. Like, you’ll find yourself checking your watch and wondering when something interesting is going to happen.

And that that ending, oh the ending! It’s not your typical Hollywood ride-off-into-the-sunset scenario ending, but it’s real and it’s heartfelt — and rather depressing. It leaves you with this lingering feeling of what could have been, and honestly, it’s refreshing to see a film that doesn’t shy away from the complexities of real life. But you might want to have a comfort movie lined up for after. It’s a tough pill to swallow, especially after riding the emotional rollercoaster that is Kol and Adam’s ‘will they/won’t they’ relationship.

Despite the slow bits and the heart-wrenching conclusion, “Of an Age” does a fantastic job of capturing the essence of first love and the bittersweet realities that come with it. If you’re into films that make you laugh, cry, and contemplate life all at the same time, then you may want to give it a watch. The performances are top-notch, and the 90s throwback is a treat. Just be prepared for a bit of a slog in places and maybe keep a box of tissues handy for that ending.

So, if you’re in the mood for a nostalgia-filled, emotion-packed film and don’t mind a bit of a downer ending, give “Of an Age” a watch. Just remember, I warned you about the slow parts and the tears! 😉

Catch you at the movies! 🌟🎥🍿😭

Movie-a-Day Challenge: Violent Night

Violent night

This post is part of my movie-a-day challenge in which I will watch a film every day for 365 days. You can see all the posts for this challenge HERE

Hey there, fellow movie buffs! 🎬

So, I recently curled up with a big bowl of popcorn (okay, maybe two) to watch the 2022 film “Violent Night,” directed by the one and only Tommy Wirkola. And let me tell you, the title is no joke – it’s exactly as advertised! This film is a wild, bloody, and absolutely gory ride, (in the best possible way) but guess what? I absolutely loved it! 🍿💥

First off, let’s get one thing straight – “Violent Night” is not your typical Christmas movie. If you’re thinking of a cozy, family-friendly holiday film… think again! This is more like if “Home Alone” met a Quentin Tarantino flick – lots of action, lots of “ouch” moments, and a hefty dose of dark humor. 🎅🔪

So, the plot? It’s Christmas Eve, and we’ve got a group of mercenaries who decide to crash a wealthy family’s holiday party. But here’s the twist – they’re not the only unexpected guests. Enter our not-so-typical Santa Claus, who’s more action hero than jolly old elf. 🎅💥

This Santa, let me tell you, he’s not just about ho-ho-ho and distributing gifts. When the bad guys start causing havoc, he’s all in for saving the day, and let’s just say, his methods aren’t exactly from the storybooks. It’s like “Home Alone” but cranked up to a whole new level of wild. The traps, the fights, the sheer audacity of it all – it’s like watching a comic book come to life.

The film takes us on a crazy journey that’s as unpredictable as it is entertaining. It’s like every turn of the story brings something more outrageous than the last. I found myself gasping and laughing in equal measures – a bizarre combo, but it totally works here! The action sequences are brilliantly choreographed, making you wince and cheer at the same time.

And let’s talk about the characters. They are a hoot, each with their own brand of crazy! The dialogues are snarky, and the action sequences? Absolutely bonkers! It’s a film that doesn’t take itself too seriously, and that’s what makes it such a blast. They’re as colorful as a string of Christmas lights, each with their own quirks and twists. The dialogue is snappy, and the performances are spot-on, striking that perfect balance between over-the-top and genuinely engaging.

In short, “Violent Night” is a holiday film with a wicked twist – and not for the faint of heart. It’s perfect for those who like their Christmas movies with a side of adrenaline and a dash of mayhem. If you’re into films that mix a bit of gore with your Christmas cheer, then you’re in for a treat. Just don’t make the mistake of gathering the kiddos for this one – it’s a solo or adults-only kind of night. 🚫👶

So, if you’re up for a film that’s as intense as it is festive, give “Violent Night” a watch (but maybe have a pillow handy to hide behind). You might just find yourself adding it to your list of ‘unconventional’ holiday favorites. 🍿🎄

Happy watching!
Roger 🌟
