Of an age

Hey there, friends! Itโ€™s time for another cinematic adventure. ๐ŸŽฌ

So, I just finished watching “Of An Age,” directed by the one and only Goran Stolevski, and let me tell you, it’s a wild ride through the emotional rollercoaster that is the summer of 1999. Spoiler alert โ€“ I’m about to dive deep into the plot, so if you haven’t seen it yet, consider this your warning! ๐Ÿšจ

Picture this: It’s Melbourne, Australia, 1999 โ€“ a time when boy bands ruled the airwaves, and the Y2K scare was a real thing (I mean, were computers really going to end the world? ๐Ÿ˜‚) We’ve got this 17-year-old Serbian ballroom dancer, Kol (played by Elias Anton), who’s just living his life, you know, doing the dance thing. But then, BAM! His brother’s best friend, Adam (hello, Thom Green!), comes into the picture, and suddenly we’re in a whirlwind of young love and heartache. Talk about a plot twist!

The beauty of this film is how it captures that crazy, confusing, and totally exhilarating feeling of first love. The chemistry between Kol and Adam? It’s like watching fireworks on a hot summer night โ€“ absolutely dazzling and a bit unexpected. ๐ŸŽ†.

The film does this amazing thing where it captures the essence of first love and the heartache of unrequited feelings. You’re rooting for Kol and Ebony, but at the same time, you’re like, “Oh boy, this is gonna be a bumpy ride.” And it is! There’s this intense scene after a party where they finally confront their feelings, and I’m not ashamed to admit, I might have teared up a bit. ๐Ÿ˜ข

What I absolutely adore about this film is its raw honesty. It’s not just a love story; it’s a coming-of-age tale that delves into themes of identity, cultural differences, and the bittersweet nature of growing up. Stolevski does a phenomenal job of painting this vivid picture of 90s Australia, complete with all the nostalgia (those fashion choices, am I right?).

Now, for some real talk โ€“ the film has its bittersweet moments. It’s not all sunshine and rainbows, but that’s what makes it relatable, right? It’s a raw and honest depiction of how complicated and messy love can be, especially when you’re just figuring yourself out. And while the film has its ‘wow’ moments, there are parts where it kind of drags. Like, you’ll find yourself checking your watch and wondering when something interesting is going to happen.

And that that ending, oh the ending! It’s not your typical Hollywood ride-off-into-the-sunset scenario ending, but it’s real and it’s heartfelt โ€” and rather depressing. It leaves you with this lingering feeling of what could have been, and honestly, it’s refreshing to see a film that doesn’t shy away from the complexities of real life. But you might want to have a comfort movie lined up for after. It’s a tough pill to swallow, especially after riding the emotional rollercoaster that is Kol and Adam’s โ€˜will they/wonโ€™t theyโ€™ relationship.

Despite the slow bits and the heart-wrenching conclusion, “Of an Age” does a fantastic job of capturing the essence of first love and the bittersweet realities that come with it. If you’re into films that make you laugh, cry, and contemplate life all at the same time, then you may want to give it a watch. The performances are top-notch, and the 90s throwback is a treat. Just be prepared for a bit of a slog in places and maybe keep a box of tissues handy for that ending.

So, if you’re in the mood for a nostalgia-filled, emotion-packed film and don’t mind a bit of a downer ending, give “Of an Age” a watch. Just remember, I warned you about the slow parts and the tears! ๐Ÿ˜‰

Catch you at the movies! ๐ŸŒŸ๐ŸŽฅ๐Ÿฟ๐Ÿ˜ญ

Movie-a-Day Challenge: Violent Night

Violent night

This post is part of my movie-a-day challenge in which I will watch a film every day for 365 days. You can see all the posts for this challenge HERE

Hey there, fellow movie buffs! ๐ŸŽฌ

So, I recently curled up with a big bowl of popcorn (okay, maybe two) to watch the 2022 film “Violent Night,” directed by the one and only Tommy Wirkola. And let me tell you, the title is no joke โ€“ it’s exactly as advertised! This film is a wild, bloody, and absolutely gory ride, (in the best possible way) but guess what? I absolutely loved it! ๐Ÿฟ๐Ÿ’ฅ

First off, letโ€™s get one thing straight โ€“ “Violent Night” is not your typical Christmas movie. If youโ€™re thinking of a cozy, family-friendly holiday film… think again! This is more like if “Home Alone” met a Quentin Tarantino flick โ€“ lots of action, lots of “ouch” moments, and a hefty dose of dark humor. ๐ŸŽ…๐Ÿ”ช

So, the plot? It’s Christmas Eve, and we’ve got a group of mercenaries who decide to crash a wealthy family’s holiday party. But here’s the twist โ€“ they’re not the only unexpected guests. Enter our not-so-typical Santa Claus, who’s more action hero than jolly old elf. ๐ŸŽ…๐Ÿ’ฅ

This Santa, let me tell you, he’s not just about ho-ho-ho and distributing gifts. When the bad guys start causing havoc, he’s all in for saving the day, and let’s just say, his methods arenโ€™t exactly from the storybooks. It’s like “Home Alone” but cranked up to a whole new level of wild. The traps, the fights, the sheer audacity of it all โ€“ it’s like watching a comic book come to life.

The film takes us on a crazy journey that’s as unpredictable as it is entertaining. It’s like every turn of the story brings something more outrageous than the last. I found myself gasping and laughing in equal measures โ€“ a bizarre combo, but it totally works here! The action sequences are brilliantly choreographed, making you wince and cheer at the same time.

And letโ€™s talk about the characters. They are a hoot, each with their own brand of crazy! The dialogues are snarky, and the action sequences? Absolutely bonkers! It’s a film that doesn’t take itself too seriously, and that’s what makes it such a blast. They’re as colorful as a string of Christmas lights, each with their own quirks and twists. The dialogue is snappy, and the performances are spot-on, striking that perfect balance between over-the-top and genuinely engaging.

In short, “Violent Night” is a holiday film with a wicked twist โ€“ and not for the faint of heart. It’s perfect for those who like their Christmas movies with a side of adrenaline and a dash of mayhem. If youโ€™re into films that mix a bit of gore with your Christmas cheer, then youโ€™re in for a treat. Just don’t make the mistake of gathering the kiddos for this one โ€“ it’s a solo or adults-only kind of night. ๐Ÿšซ๐Ÿ‘ถ

So, if you’re up for a film that’s as intense as it is festive, give “Violent Night” a watch (but maybe have a pillow handy to hide behind). You might just find yourself adding it to your list of โ€˜unconventionalโ€™ holiday favorites. ๐Ÿฟ๐ŸŽ„

Happy watching!

Movie-a-Day Challenge: Along With the Gods: The Two Worlds

Along with the gods the two worlds film image

This post is part of my movie-a-day challenge in which I will watch a film every day for 365 days. You can see all the posts for this challenge HERE

Hey friends!

So, I finally got around to watching “Along With the Gods: The Two Worlds,” and let me tell you, it’s a rollercoaster of emotions! Directed by Yong-hwa Kim, this 2017 South Korean film is like a wild ride through a mystical theme park you never knew existed. ๐ŸŽข

The story? It’s all about the afterlife, but not in a creepy, ghostly way. Imagine if you had supernatural beings (who are surprisingly relatable) guiding you through trials to determine your fate in the afterlife. Sounds intense, right? But here’s the twist โ€“ it’s packed with humor, heart, and some mind-blowing action scenes that’ll make you forget to munch on your popcorn! ๐Ÿฟ

Letโ€™s dive into the plot a bit. The film kicks off with a brave firefighter, Ja-hong, who dies heroically. But death is just the beginning here. Ja-hong is escorted by three guardians through the afterlife where he must pass seven trials over 49 days. Each trial tests a different aspect of his life – betrayal, violence, indolence… You get the picture. The aim? Prove he led a noble life and secure his spot in the afterlife. But it’s not just about him; the guardians have their own backstories that intertwine with Ja-hongโ€™s journey, adding layers to the narrative.

The visuals are stunning. We’re talking top-notch CGI that makes you feel like you’re part of this fantastical world. The special effects team really outdid themselves, creating a feast for the eyes. ๐ŸŒˆ

What really got me were the characters. Each guardian had their own unique personality, and their banter was the cherry on top of this cinematic sundae. The emotional depth they bring to the table is something you wouldn’t expect in a fantasy film. I mean, one moment I’m laughing, and the next, I’m reaching for tissues. ๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜ญ

The plot twists are another level. Just when you think youโ€™ve figured it all out, bam! The film takes a turn you didn’t see coming. It’s like playing a game of cosmic chess with the universe. ๐ŸŒŒ

Now, it’s not all sunshine and rainbows. Some parts felt a bit dragged out, and I found myself checking my watch a couple of times. But hey, no film is perfect, right?

In a nutshell, “Along With the Gods: The Two Worlds” is a fantastic blend of fantasy, action, and emotion. It’s a film that’s not just about the afterlife, but about the bonds we form in life. So grab some snacks, find a comfy spot, and give this movie a watch. You won’t regret it! ๐Ÿ•๐Ÿ›‹๏ธ. I think I must may have found a new film to add to my favorites list.

See you on the flip side! ๐Ÿ‘‹

Movie-a-Day Challenge: Soft Lad

Soft lad

This post is part of my movie-a-day challenge in which I will watch a film every day for 365 days. You can see all the posts for this challenge HERE

Hey there, fellow movie buffs! ๐ŸŽฌ Just watched “Soft Lad” directed by Leon Lopez (2015), and I’ve got some thoughts to share. Let’s dive right into it!

This film is a gay-themed drama with a somewhat predictable storyline about a complicated love triangle involving a young dancer, David, his sister’s husband, Jules, and another man, Sam. The film explores themes of love, lust, betrayal, and the challenges of coming to terms with one’s sexuality. Without giving too much away, let’s just say there’s a lot of heartache and tough lessons learned.

The plot, while somewhat predictable, does a decent job of portraying the struggles and conflicts faced by the protagonist. But hey, not every story needs to twist and turn to be engaging, right? However, at times, it felt like the story was treading familiar territory.

One thing that bugged me a bit was the music score and vocals. They were intense, but sometimes they totally drowned out the dialogue. I mean, I’m all for dramatic music, but I also want to hear what the characters are saying, right? ๐Ÿ˜•

And ugh, the ending was just crushing… it was a real downer. We’re talking full-on tragedy and despair to the max. It’s like you can see the train wreck coming, but you’re powerless to stop it. ๐Ÿ˜ข

On the acting front, kudos to the cast โ€“ they really brought their A-game. The performances were genuine and heartfelt. But, and it’s a big but, the film was sooooo depressing. It wasn’t just a little sad; it was like diving headfirst into a pool of gloom. ๐Ÿ˜จ

As the movie progressed, I felt it started to drag a bit toward the end. Like, I get it, we’re in the thick of despair, but let’s move it along, please. Despite the solid acting, the overwhelming sense of dismalness just made it a tough watch. There were parts where I was literally squirming in my seat, it was that intense. ๐Ÿ˜ฃ

You know, it seems like a lot of gay-themed movies tend to be big downers like this. I swear they’re often so depressing! ๐Ÿ˜‘ Sure they tackle important topics, but throw us a bone with some happiness once in awhile, amirite?

So, there you have it. “Soft Lad” is a well-acted exploration of love, pain, and the complexities of relationships. But be warned โ€“ it’s a heavy watch, filled with a heavy dose of sadness and despair. ๐Ÿ’” If you’re looking for a pick-me-up flick, this ain’t it! Youโ€™ll want to make sure to have something light and cheerful lined up for afterward! ๐ŸŒˆ

Catch you next time,

Movie-a-Day Challenge: Pitch Perfect

Hey there, movie buffs! ๐Ÿฟ๐ŸŽฌ

Guess who finally hopped on the “Pitch Perfect” train, a mere decade late? Yep, thatโ€™s me, and let me tell you, it was aca-awesome! ๐ŸŽ‰ Directed by Jason Moore, this 2012 flick is like a love letter to all things a cappella with a side of sass and a dollop of delightful absurdity. ๐ŸŒŸ This gem is like a burst of musical energy mixed with a dash of humor that hits just the right note.

The story revolves around an all-girls a cappella group, the Barden Bellas, who are striving to revamp their style and win a national competition. What’s not to love, right?

Anna Kendrick plays Beca, the too-cool-for-school college freshman who’d rather mix music than sing it. But plot twist! She winds up in the Barden Bellas, an all-girls singing squad desperate for a makeover. Her fresh take on music and her rebellious spirit shake things up, putting the Bellas on a path to aca-domination. ๐Ÿ†

What I loved about “Pitch Perfect” was its ability to seamlessly blend comedy and heart. The characters are hilarious, from the uptight and traditional leader of the Bellas, Aubrey Posen (Anna Camp), to the quirky and lovable Fat Amy (Rebel Wilson), who steals the show with her outlandish personality and powerhouse vocals. ๐ŸŽค๐Ÿ˜‚. The chemistry among the Bellas is tangible, and you can’t help but root for them all the way.

The music, oh, the music! ๐ŸŽต The film is packed with incredible a cappella arrangements of popular songs, from classics like “Hit Me with Your Best Shot” to modern hits like “Party Rock Anthem” that had me tapping my feet throughout. The performances are electrifying, and you’ll be cheering the Bellas on as they take on their rivals, the Treblemakers. ๐ŸŽถ๐Ÿ’ฏ.

And the riff-off scene? Absolutely iconic. It’s a showcase of how a cappella can be cool and competitive. Plus, the final performance is both heartwarming and electrifying โ€“ it really encapsulates the film’s spirit.

But it’s not just about the singing. The film tackles themes of friendship, finding your own voice, and the importance of teamwork; it’s a celebration of music and self-expression. It’s a reminder that being different is not a weakness, but a strength. And it’s a testament to the power of music to bring people together. ๐ŸŽถ๐Ÿ’œ

It’s also packed with witty one-liners and quirky characters that add depth and humor beyond the music. Sure, some of the jokes might be a bit over the top, but hey, it’s all in good fun!

In short, “Pitch Perfect” is the cinematic equivalent of your favorite comfort food โ€“ it’s not going to win any Michelin stars, but it’s darn satisfying. It’s a feel-good, laugh-out-loud romp that doesnโ€™t take itself too seriously, and neither should you. So grab your remote (or your hairbrush microphone), get comfy, and let the Bellas serenade you. Itโ€™s aca-mazing! I promise you’ll be humming the songs for days to come! ๐ŸŽถ๐Ÿค—

Happy watching, and keep on singing!

Movie-a-Day Challenge: Doctor Sleep

Hey there, movie friends! ๐ŸŽฅโœจ

I just had the pleasure of watching “Doctor Sleep,” the 2019 sequel to the iconic “The Shining,” directed by the talented Mike Flanagan. This film is not just a mere follow-up; it’s a journey into a beautifully dark world that honors its predecessor while carving its own identity.

The story picks up years after the events at the Overlook Hotel, and we see Danny grappling with trauma and alcoholism. It’s dark but deeply moving.

Speaking of Danny, Ewan McGregor shines as an adult Danny Torrance.ย But what really adds depth to the story is the introduction of Abra, played brilliantly by Kyliegh Curran. She’s a young girl with her own powerful ‘shine,’ and her character adds a fresh, compelling dynamic to the story. Watching her and Danny form a bond, navigating their abilities and facing daunting foes, is one of the highlights of the film.

Now, onto the new elements. The introduction of the True Knot, a group of psychic vampires led by Rebecca Ferguson’s character, the mesmerizing ‘Rose the Hat,’ is genuinely chilling. Ferguson is fantastic, bringing a mix of charisma and menace that’s just perfect for the role. These villains add a new level of creepiness and intrigue to the story. Their pursuit of immortality by preying on those with the shine sets the stage for some truly tense moments. And the way the film explores the supernatural elements while keeping the human emotion at the forefront is impressive.

Now, let’s talk about the length. Yes, it’s a 2-1/2 hour movie, but believe me, it doesn’t feel like it. The pacing is so well-handled that time just seems to fly by. You’re so pulled into the world of Danny and Abra, their struggles and triumphs, that you barely notice how long you’ve been watching.

Visually, “Doctor Sleep” is a treat. The callbacks to the original “The Shining” are done with such care and respect. Those iconic hallway scenes? Still as creepy as ever. And the final act? No spoilers, but it’s a satisfying nod to fans of the original.

The pacing might feel slow to some, but I think it allows the story to breathe and the characters to develop. This isn’t just a horror movie; it’s a deep dive into dealing with trauma, addiction, and finding redemption.

In summary, “Doctor Sleep” is a fantastic film. It’s a story about facing your demons, both literal and metaphorical, and the power of connection. Mike Flanagan has crafted a sequel that stands tall on its own merits while respecting the legacy of “The Shining” — a fantastic blend of the old and the new.

That’s it from me. To all my American friends out there, Happy Thanksgiving! ๐Ÿฆƒ๐Ÿ May your day be filled with joy, delicious food, and maybe a good movie or two!

Catch you in the next review,
Roger ๐ŸŒŸ๐ŸŽฌ๐Ÿฟ

Movie-a-day Challenge: Teen Wolf: The Movie

Teen Wolf: The Movie image

This post is part of my movie-a-day challenge in which I will watch a film every day for 365 days. You can see all the posts for this challenge HERE

Hey friends! ๐Ÿ‘‹

I just watched “Teen Wolf: The Movie,” directed by Russell Mulcahy, and let me tell you, it was a bit of a rollercoaster. As someone who was a die hard fan of the original TV series, I was both excited and a tad nervous about this blast from the past. And Iโ€™ll admit, nostalgia hit me hard seeing some of my favorite characters back on the screen โ€“ it was like a high school reunion, werewolf style! ๐Ÿบ ๐ŸŒ•

But, and it’s a big but, the movie just didn’t recapture that unique magic of the series. It felt like seeing an old friend who’s changed a bit too much. I also was really bummed that Stiles wasn’t part of this adventure. His humor and wit were a big part of what made the TV series so special, and his absence was definitely felt. The dynamic just wasn’t the same without him. ๐Ÿ˜”

The plot picks up fifteen years after the TV series ended, with Scott McCall coming back to Beacon Hills. This time, he’s not just dealing with teenage angst and fur problems; there’s a new menacing threat in town. While the plot tried to juggle this fresh danger with the nostalgia of seeing our favorite characters, it felt like a whirlwind that left a few too many questions unanswered. ๐ŸŒช๏ธ It’s like they tried to cram a whole season’s worth of drama into a two-hour slot. ๐Ÿƒโ€โ™‚๏ธ๐Ÿ’จ

One bright spot, though? Eli. I genuinely liked his character. There was something intriguing about him that caught my attention. But just like a good book you can’t put down, I wished his story had more pages. His character had so much potential, but it felt like he was only skimming the surface. A deeper dive into Eli’s backstory and motivations would have added some much-needed depth to the plot. ๐Ÿ“š

I only decided to watch the film because of my love for the show, but ultimately, ended up feeling somewhat disappointed. In terms of the plot, it felt like the movie was trying to sprint through a marathon. There were plot holes that left me more puzzled than intrigued, and the character development, in general, could have used a boost. It’s as if the movie relied heavily on our fond memories of the characters rather than giving them new layers and challenges to overcome. ๐Ÿƒโ€โ™‚๏ธ๐Ÿ’จ A bit more history or insight into what they’ve been up to would have made a huge difference.

All in all, “Teen Wolf: The Movie” was a trip down memory lane, but it’s like it took a few wrong turns. It was great seeing the old gang, but without the same heart and depth as the original series, it fell flat for me. It had its moments, especially with Eli, but overall, it lacked the magic touch of the original series. If you were a fan of the show, you might find some joy in the nostalgia, but don’t expect the same spark. Here’s to hoping for better revivals in the future! ๐ŸŒŸ

Catch ya next time,

Roger

P.S. – If anyone else has seen it, I’d love to hear your thoughts! Let’s chat in the comments. ๐Ÿ‘‡
