Hey friends!

So, I finally got around to watching “Along With the Gods: The Two Worlds,” and let me tell you, it’s a rollercoaster of emotions! Directed by Yong-hwa Kim, this 2017 South Korean film is like a wild ride through a mystical theme park you never knew existed. 🎢

The story? It’s all about the afterlife, but not in a creepy, ghostly way. Imagine if you had supernatural beings (who are surprisingly relatable) guiding you through trials to determine your fate in the afterlife. Sounds intense, right? But here’s the twist – it’s packed with humor, heart, and some mind-blowing action scenes that’ll make you forget to munch on your popcorn! 🍿

Let’s dive into the plot a bit. The film kicks off with a brave firefighter, Ja-hong, who dies heroically. But death is just the beginning here. Ja-hong is escorted by three guardians through the afterlife where he must pass seven trials over 49 days. Each trial tests a different aspect of his life – betrayal, violence, indolence… You get the picture. The aim? Prove he led a noble life and secure his spot in the afterlife. But it’s not just about him; the guardians have their own backstories that intertwine with Ja-hong’s journey, adding layers to the narrative.

The visuals are stunning. We’re talking top-notch CGI that makes you feel like you’re part of this fantastical world. The special effects team really outdid themselves, creating a feast for the eyes. 🌈

What really got me were the characters. Each guardian had their own unique personality, and their banter was the cherry on top of this cinematic sundae. The emotional depth they bring to the table is something you wouldn’t expect in a fantasy film. I mean, one moment I’m laughing, and the next, I’m reaching for tissues. 😂😭

The plot twists are another level. Just when you think you’ve figured it all out, bam! The film takes a turn you didn’t see coming. It’s like playing a game of cosmic chess with the universe. 🌌

Now, it’s not all sunshine and rainbows. Some parts felt a bit dragged out, and I found myself checking my watch a couple of times. But hey, no film is perfect, right?

In a nutshell, “Along With the Gods: The Two Worlds” is a fantastic blend of fantasy, action, and emotion. It’s a film that’s not just about the afterlife, but about the bonds we form in life. So grab some snacks, find a comfy spot, and give this movie a watch. You won’t regret it! 🍕🛋️. I think I must may have found a new film to add to my favorites list.

See you on the flip side! 👋
Roger

Movie-a-Day Challenge: Soft Lad

Soft lad

This post is part of my movie-a-day challenge in which I will watch a film every day for 365 days. You can see all the posts for this challenge HERE

Hey there, fellow movie buffs! 🎬 Just watched “Soft Lad” directed by Leon Lopez (2015), and I’ve got some thoughts to share. Let’s dive right into it!

This film is a gay-themed drama with a somewhat predictable storyline about a complicated love triangle involving a young dancer, David, his sister’s husband, Jules, and another man, Sam. The film explores themes of love, lust, betrayal, and the challenges of coming to terms with one’s sexuality. Without giving too much away, let’s just say there’s a lot of heartache and tough lessons learned.

The plot, while somewhat predictable, does a decent job of portraying the struggles and conflicts faced by the protagonist. But hey, not every story needs to twist and turn to be engaging, right? However, at times, it felt like the story was treading familiar territory.

One thing that bugged me a bit was the music score and vocals. They were intense, but sometimes they totally drowned out the dialogue. I mean, I’m all for dramatic music, but I also want to hear what the characters are saying, right? 😕

And ugh, the ending was just crushing… it was a real downer. We’re talking full-on tragedy and despair to the max. It’s like you can see the train wreck coming, but you’re powerless to stop it. 😢

On the acting front, kudos to the cast – they really brought their A-game. The performances were genuine and heartfelt. But, and it’s a big but, the film was sooooo depressing. It wasn’t just a little sad; it was like diving headfirst into a pool of gloom. 😨

As the movie progressed, I felt it started to drag a bit toward the end. Like, I get it, we’re in the thick of despair, but let’s move it along, please. Despite the solid acting, the overwhelming sense of dismalness just made it a tough watch. There were parts where I was literally squirming in my seat, it was that intense. 😣

You know, it seems like a lot of gay-themed movies tend to be big downers like this. I swear they’re often so depressing! 😑 Sure they tackle important topics, but throw us a bone with some happiness once in awhile, amirite?

So, there you have it. “Soft Lad” is a well-acted exploration of love, pain, and the complexities of relationships. But be warned – it’s a heavy watch, filled with a heavy dose of sadness and despair. 💔 If you’re looking for a pick-me-up flick, this ain’t it! You’ll want to make sure to have something light and cheerful lined up for afterward! 🌈

Catch you next time,
Roger🍿🎥

Movie-a-Day Challenge: Pitch Perfect

Hey there, movie buffs! 🍿🎬

Guess who finally hopped on the “Pitch Perfect” train, a mere decade late? Yep, that’s me, and let me tell you, it was aca-awesome! 🎉 Directed by Jason Moore, this 2012 flick is like a love letter to all things a cappella with a side of sass and a dollop of delightful absurdity. 🌟 This gem is like a burst of musical energy mixed with a dash of humor that hits just the right note.

The story revolves around an all-girls a cappella group, the Barden Bellas, who are striving to revamp their style and win a national competition. What’s not to love, right?

Anna Kendrick plays Beca, the too-cool-for-school college freshman who’d rather mix music than sing it. But plot twist! She winds up in the Barden Bellas, an all-girls singing squad desperate for a makeover. Her fresh take on music and her rebellious spirit shake things up, putting the Bellas on a path to aca-domination. 🏆

What I loved about “Pitch Perfect” was its ability to seamlessly blend comedy and heart. The characters are hilarious, from the uptight and traditional leader of the Bellas, Aubrey Posen (Anna Camp), to the quirky and lovable Fat Amy (Rebel Wilson), who steals the show with her outlandish personality and powerhouse vocals. 🎤😂. The chemistry among the Bellas is tangible, and you can’t help but root for them all the way.

The music, oh, the music! 🎵 The film is packed with incredible a cappella arrangements of popular songs, from classics like “Hit Me with Your Best Shot” to modern hits like “Party Rock Anthem” that had me tapping my feet throughout. The performances are electrifying, and you’ll be cheering the Bellas on as they take on their rivals, the Treblemakers. 🎶💯.

And the riff-off scene? Absolutely iconic. It’s a showcase of how a cappella can be cool and competitive. Plus, the final performance is both heartwarming and electrifying – it really encapsulates the film’s spirit.

But it’s not just about the singing. The film tackles themes of friendship, finding your own voice, and the importance of teamwork; it’s a celebration of music and self-expression. It’s a reminder that being different is not a weakness, but a strength. And it’s a testament to the power of music to bring people together. 🎶💜

It’s also packed with witty one-liners and quirky characters that add depth and humor beyond the music. Sure, some of the jokes might be a bit over the top, but hey, it’s all in good fun!

In short, “Pitch Perfect” is the cinematic equivalent of your favorite comfort food – it’s not going to win any Michelin stars, but it’s darn satisfying. It’s a feel-good, laugh-out-loud romp that doesn’t take itself too seriously, and neither should you. So grab your remote (or your hairbrush microphone), get comfy, and let the Bellas serenade you. It’s aca-mazing! I promise you’ll be humming the songs for days to come! 🎶🤗

Happy watching, and keep on singing!
Roger 🎤🌟🎶

Movie-a-Day Challenge: Doctor Sleep

Doctor sleep

This post is part of my movie-a-day challenge in which I will watch a film every day for 365 days. You can see all the posts for this challenge HERE

Hey there, movie friends! 🎥✨

I just had the pleasure of watching “Doctor Sleep,” the 2019 sequel to the iconic “The Shining,” directed by the talented Mike Flanagan. This film is not just a mere follow-up; it’s a journey into a beautifully dark world that honors its predecessor while carving its own identity.

The story picks up years after the events at the Overlook Hotel, and we see Danny grappling with trauma and alcoholism. It’s dark but deeply moving.

Speaking of Danny, Ewan McGregor shines as an adult Danny Torrance. But what really adds depth to the story is the introduction of Abra, played brilliantly by Kyliegh Curran. She’s a young girl with her own powerful ‘shine,’ and her character adds a fresh, compelling dynamic to the story. Watching her and Danny form a bond, navigating their abilities and facing daunting foes, is one of the highlights of the film.

Now, onto the new elements. The introduction of the True Knot, a group of psychic vampires led by Rebecca Ferguson’s character, the mesmerizing ‘Rose the Hat,’ is genuinely chilling. Ferguson is fantastic, bringing a mix of charisma and menace that’s just perfect for the role. These villains add a new level of creepiness and intrigue to the story. Their pursuit of immortality by preying on those with the shine sets the stage for some truly tense moments. And the way the film explores the supernatural elements while keeping the human emotion at the forefront is impressive.

Now, let’s talk about the length. Yes, it’s a 2-1/2 hour movie, but believe me, it doesn’t feel like it. The pacing is so well-handled that time just seems to fly by. You’re so pulled into the world of Danny and Abra, their struggles and triumphs, that you barely notice how long you’ve been watching.

Visually, “Doctor Sleep” is a treat. The callbacks to the original “The Shining” are done with such care and respect. Those iconic hallway scenes? Still as creepy as ever. And the final act? No spoilers, but it’s a satisfying nod to fans of the original.

The pacing might feel slow to some, but I think it allows the story to breathe and the characters to develop. This isn’t just a horror movie; it’s a deep dive into dealing with trauma, addiction, and finding redemption.

In summary, “Doctor Sleep” is a fantastic film. It’s a story about facing your demons, both literal and metaphorical, and the power of connection. Mike Flanagan has crafted a sequel that stands tall on its own merits while respecting the legacy of “The Shining” — a fantastic blend of the old and the new.

That’s it from me. To all my American friends out there, Happy Thanksgiving! 🦃🍁 May your day be filled with joy, delicious food, and maybe a good movie or two!

Catch you in the next review,
Roger 🌟🎬🍿

Movie-a-day Challenge: Teen Wolf: The Movie

Teen Wolf: The Movie image

This post is part of my movie-a-day challenge in which I will watch a film every day for 365 days. You can see all the posts for this challenge HERE

Hey friends! 👋

I just watched “Teen Wolf: The Movie,” directed by Russell Mulcahy, and let me tell you, it was a bit of a rollercoaster. As someone who was a die hard fan of the original TV series, I was both excited and a tad nervous about this blast from the past. And I’ll admit, nostalgia hit me hard seeing some of my favorite characters back on the screen – it was like a high school reunion, werewolf style! 🐺 🌕

But, and it’s a big but, the movie just didn’t recapture that unique magic of the series. It felt like seeing an old friend who’s changed a bit too much. I also was really bummed that Stiles wasn’t part of this adventure. His humor and wit were a big part of what made the TV series so special, and his absence was definitely felt. The dynamic just wasn’t the same without him. 😔

The plot picks up fifteen years after the TV series ended, with Scott McCall coming back to Beacon Hills. This time, he’s not just dealing with teenage angst and fur problems; there’s a new menacing threat in town. While the plot tried to juggle this fresh danger with the nostalgia of seeing our favorite characters, it felt like a whirlwind that left a few too many questions unanswered. 🌪️ It’s like they tried to cram a whole season’s worth of drama into a two-hour slot. 🏃‍♂️💨

One bright spot, though? Eli. I genuinely liked his character. There was something intriguing about him that caught my attention. But just like a good book you can’t put down, I wished his story had more pages. His character had so much potential, but it felt like he was only skimming the surface. A deeper dive into Eli’s backstory and motivations would have added some much-needed depth to the plot. 📚

I only decided to watch the film because of my love for the show, but ultimately, ended up feeling somewhat disappointed. In terms of the plot, it felt like the movie was trying to sprint through a marathon. There were plot holes that left me more puzzled than intrigued, and the character development, in general, could have used a boost. It’s as if the movie relied heavily on our fond memories of the characters rather than giving them new layers and challenges to overcome. 🏃‍♂️💨 A bit more history or insight into what they’ve been up to would have made a huge difference.

All in all, “Teen Wolf: The Movie” was a trip down memory lane, but it’s like it took a few wrong turns. It was great seeing the old gang, but without the same heart and depth as the original series, it fell flat for me. It had its moments, especially with Eli, but overall, it lacked the magic touch of the original series. If you were a fan of the show, you might find some joy in the nostalgia, but don’t expect the same spark. Here’s to hoping for better revivals in the future! 🌟

Catch ya next time,

Roger

P.S. – If anyone else has seen it, I’d love to hear your thoughts! Let’s chat in the comments. 👇

Movie-a-Day Challenge: Blue Beetle

Hey there, fellow movie buffs! 🎬

Just finished watching the 2023 film, “Blue Beetle,” directed by the talented Angel Manuel Soto, and I’m here to spill all the tea on it. 🍵 First things first, I gotta confess – before tonight, I knew nothing at all about Blue Beetle. Yep, never read the comics, so I was a total newbie to the story. 🦋

The film itself? A rollercoaster of excitement and emotions! The story revolves around this young guy who stumbles upon a mysterious, alien-like gadget that gives him some pretty wild superpowers. The whole transformation scene was mind-blowing! 🌟 The CGI? Top-notch. It was like watching a comic book come to life on the big screen.

Now, about the characters — they were so relatable and well-portrayed. The lead actor totally nailed the role of a regular kid turned superhero. And the chemistry between the characters? Simply amazing. It added a real, human touch to a sci-fi story. The dialogues were a mix of witty banter and deep, thought-provoking lines, which I absolutely loved. 🗨️

The director, Angel Manuel Soto, did a fantastic job in blending action, humor, and heart. The pacing was just right – fast enough to keep you on the edge of your seat but slow enough to let the story breathe. The action scenes were a visual treat, and the soundtrack complemented the vibe of the movie perfectly. 🎶

What I appreciated the most was how the movie didn’t require any prior knowledge of the Blue Beetle lore, which I personally appreciated. It was a standalone gem that could be enjoyed by both die-hard fans and newcomers like myself. It’s a fresh take in the superhero genre and definitely a must-watch if you’re into action-packed, heartwarming stories.

Ah, I almost forgot to rave about the actors, especially Xolo Maridueña, who absolutely stole the show in “Blue Beetle“! 🌟

Xolo Maridueña, whom you might recognize from “Cobra Kai,” stepped into the superhero role like he was born for it. His portrayal of the main character was spot-on. He brought this authentic, youthful energy that made his character super relatable. Watching him juggle the everyday struggles of being a teenager with the newfound responsibilities of a superhero was both entertaining and heartwarming. 🦸‍♂️

The chemistry between Maridueña and the rest of the cast was another highlight. It felt like they were genuinely having fun, and that energy translated onto the screen. Whether it was the action sequences or the more emotional scenes, he managed to hold his own and really carried the film. His portrayal added layers to the film, making it not just a superhero movie, but a story about growth, challenges, family, and the journey to finding one’s true self. 🌠

And it wasn’t just Maridueña; the entire cast brought their A-game. The supporting characters added depth and humor to the story, making the whole movie experience feel like a journey with old friends.

So, would I recommend it? Absolutely! Whether you’re a comic book fanatic or just someone looking for a good movie to watch, “Blue Beetle” won’t disappoint. I think I’m going to have to delve into the Blue Beetle comic books now. 📚

Catch you at the next screening,
Roger

P.S. Make sure you watch the post-credits scene; it’s a game-changer! 😉🎥

Movie-a-Day Challenge: The Door into Summer

Hey there, fellow movie buffs!

As you know, I’ve been on this super fun movie-a-day challenge, and it’s honestly been such a blast. It’s pushing me to explore films I might not have picked up otherwise, like Takahiro Miki’s 2021 gem, “The Door into Summer.” And let me tell you, this one was a delightful surprise!

As someone who’s diving into a different movie each day, I’m finding myself immersed in all sorts of genres and stories. “The Door into Summer” is a perfect example of this adventure. Adapted from Robert A. Heinlein’s classic sci-fi novel, the film beautifully intertwines time travel with the complexities of human emotion, and it’s a narrative that had me completely captivated.

The story is a fascinating blend of sci-fi and drama, set against a backdrop that seamlessly weaves past, present, and future. It’s like stepping into a world where time travel isn’t just a wild concept, but a tangible reality.

The story centers around Soichiro Takakura, played by the ever-charismatic Kento Yamazaki, who completely steals the show. Soichiro is an inventor who finds himself betrayed and decides to cryogenically freeze himself to escape his troubles, only to wake up 30 years in the future. What unfolds is a captivating blend of suspense, nostalgia, and a heart-tugging quest to fix the past.

One thing that struck me about this film is its stunning cinematography. Miki’s direction brings a visual feast that complements the emotional depth of the story. The futuristic scenes are slick and polished, yet there’s a warmth to them that feels inviting, not cold or sterile.

The narrative itself is a rollercoaster. It’s not just about the sci-fi elements; it’s deeply rooted in human emotions and relationships. There’s a touching subplot involving Soichiro’s cat, Pete, which adds a layer of sweetness to the story. And trust me, it’s not just a gimmick; it plays a pivotal role in the plot!

The supporting cast, including Kaya Kiyohara and Naohito Fujiki, delivers powerful performances that anchor the film’s fantastical elements in reality. The chemistry between the characters is palpable, making their journeys and transformations all the more engaging.

What I loved most about “The Door into Summer” is its ability to make you think. It’s not just a time-travel adventure; it’s a story about the choices we make and their lasting impacts. The film beautifully captures the essence of nostalgia and the human desire to rectify past mistakes, all while keeping you glued to the screen.

In summary, “The Door into Summer” is a must-watch. It’s a beautifully crafted film that strikes the perfect balance between science fiction and heartfelt drama. Whether you’re a fan of time-travel stories or just looking for a film that’s rich in emotion and stunning visuals, this movie is definitely worth your time. So, if you’re like me, always hunting for that next great watch, add this to your list. It’s a ride worth taking, and I can’t wait to see what movie tomorrow brings!

Catch you tomorrow for another film adventure! 🎬

Peace & Popcorn 🍿,
Roger
