Movie-a-Day Challenge: The Flash (2023)

Flash

This post is part of my movie-a-day challenge in which I will watch a film every day for 365 days. You can see all the posts for this challenge HERE

Hey Flash Fans and Pop Culture Pals,

Buckle up, because I just experienced a whirlwind adventure on my couch, where I watched “The Flash (2023)” on Max (formerly HBOMax)—quite possibly the wildest ride in the DC Extended Universe. And when I say wild, I’m not just talking about the on-screen antics.

First off, the elephant in the room: Ezra Miller. Yep, the lead actor has had more headlines for off-screen drama than for any on-screen heroics. Legal troubles and personal controversies have been following them like a shadow, and let’s be honest, it adds an odd layer of meta-tension to watch them as Barry Allen. It’s like, can we enjoy the Flash’s super-speed while the actor’s been… well, less than super off-set? It’s a bit of a conundrum that’s hard to shake off as the opening credits roll. But…. it seems like Miller’s been laying super low recently. No news, no drama, no headlines—a welcome change, to be honest. It’s like they’ve tucked themselves into their own personal Speed Force to dodge the limelight. And you know what? The silence is golden, especially with a movie that’s loud in every other conceivable way.

But onto the movie itself—holy moly, folks, “The Flash” is a big, steaming bowl of crazy with extra nuts. This isn’t just your run-of-the-mill superhero flick; it’s a full-on, time-twisting, reality-bending extravaganza with a dash of heartwarming moments that hit you faster than a bolt of lightning.

The plot? Think less “save the city” and more “save the fabric of reality itself”. The plot zigs, zags, and does loop-de-loops through the multiverse, smashing through dimensions like they’re made of wet tissue paper. You’ve got alternate realities, different versions of characters we know and love (and some we’re meeting for the first time), and enough twists to make a pretzel jealous.

The visuals are nothing short of an acid trip at light speed. We’re talking about sequences that would have Salvador Dali going, “Whoa, dial it back, buddy.” It’s a feast for the eyes—if your eyes can keep up, that is. The special effects team must have been given one directive: “Make it weird.” Mission accomplished, because every moment of super-speed shenanigans is a trippy treat.

Visually, this movie is a stunner. It’s like every frame is shot with the intention to make you feel the speed force itself. There are sequences that are so beautifully crafted, you’ll swear you can feel the wind in your hair. The special effects team deserves a raise, a medal, and maybe a vacation because the speedster’s powers have never looked cooler.

Now, the supporting cast does what they can to anchor this hurricane of a movie. There’s chemistry, there’s pathos, and there are moments that make you remember these gods among us are also human. And yes, there are cameo appearances that’ll make hardcore fans squeal and casual viewers go, “Huh, neat!” Character-wise, there’s chemistry, camaraderie, and just enough comedy to keep things from getting too dark (I’m looking at you, every DC movie pre-2018).

But it’s not all smooth running. The pace is frenetic, and not in the “exciting thriller” way, more in the “I think the film’s on fast forward” way. And for all the spectacle, the emotional beats sometimes feel as hurried as Barry on his morning jog—which is to say, they don’t stick around long.

But…amidst the breakneck speed and mind-bending visuals, it’s worth pumping the brakes to talk about the heart of “The Flash” because this movie, believe it or not, tugs at the heartstrings when you least expect it. Yes, even with all the multiverse mayhem and timeline turbulence, “The Flash” packs an emotional punch that can hit you like a freight train out of nowhere.

There’s a poignant undercurrent running through the chaos—the essence of Barry Allen’s journey. The film explores themes of loss, belonging, and the ever-relatable search for identity in a world (or worlds, in this case) that seems too vast and complex to navigate. There are moments that remind you Barry is more than his speed; he’s a person with deep ties to his past and an uncertain future, trying to make sense of it all.

The connection Barry has with his mother is central to the storyline, and it’s where the film hits you right in the feels. It reminds us that beneath the suit and the lightning is a man driven by very human emotions and desires. These tender moments between the high-octane action sequences lend the film a depth that superhero flicks sometimes miss.

Even the interactions among the different characters Barry meets within the multiverse add layers to the story. Seeing alternate versions of characters we know reflects the “what could have been” and the “what still could be,” making us invest in not just the fate of the world(s) but in the personal stakes for our main character.

So yes, “The Flash” might be a spectacle of the weird and the wild, but it’s also a tapestry woven with threads of raw and genuine human emotion. Don’t be surprised if you find yourself reaching for a tissue between the bursts of laughter and gasps of surprise. Because, when all is said and done, even superheroes need a moment to just be human.

So, the big question: is “The Flash” worth strapping on your cinema shoes for? If your movie taste buds crave the peculiar, the perplexing, and the plain old ‘what did I just watch?’—absolutely. It’s a sensory overload that doesn’t skimp on spectacle.

Just remember, it’s a strange, strange ride, but hey, it’s The Flash—would you expect anything less?

Catch ya in the speed force,
Roger

P.S. I didn’t mean for this blog post to be so long — can you tell that I’m kind of a Flash fanboy?

Movie-a-Day Challenge: Beautiful Creatures

Beautiful creatures

This post is part of my movie-a-day challenge in which I will watch a film every day for 365 days. You can see all the posts for this challenge HERE

Hey Film Buffs and Bibliophiles!

Guess who finally got around to watching “Beautiful Creatures”? Yep, yours truly – the last person on earth to see this supernatural romance flick, or so it feels! I know, I know, the movie’s been out for ages (since 2013, if we’re counting), but in my defense, my “To-Watch” list is about as long as the Great Wall of China. But enough about my procrastination skills; let’s dive into the mystical world of Gatlin, South Carolina!

First off, let’s talk about the Gothic Southern atmosphere – it’s like stepping into a humid, sultry daydream with a side of sweet tea and secrets. There’s a small-town charm in “Beautiful Creatures” that’s hard to miss, and it does a bang-up job of setting the stage for a tale of witchcraft, dark curses, and teenage angst.

The story follows Ethan Wate (played by Alden Ehrenreich), our all-too-human protagonist with a voracious appetite for books and a gnawing desire to escape the mundanity of his hometown. Enter Lena Duchannes (the ethereal Alice Englert), the new girl with the permanent storm cloud above her head (quite literally, at times). She’s not just any high school outcast – she’s a “Caster” (don’t call her a witch, it’s passé), and she’s counting down the days to her sixteenth birthday, when her powers will be claimed for either the Light or the Dark.

The chemistry between Ethan and Lena is like a live wire, full of sparks and the promise of young love – but with a supernatural twist. They’re the heart of the film, and their relationship offers a cozy respite from the typical teen love saga. Sure, we’ve seen the “forbidden love” trope a zillion times, but there’s something genuinely sweet about their bond that makes you root for them, despite the looming, possibly apocalyptic, obstacles.

Can we talk about the supporting cast for a sec? Emmy Rossum vamps it up as Ridley, Lena’s siren cousin, bringing all the deliciously wicked fun every time she struts into a scene. And then there’s the powerhouse duo, Jeremy Irons and Emma Thompson, who chew the scenery as mysterious Caster patriarch Macon Ravenwood and religious zealot Mrs. Lincoln, respectively. Viola Davis as Amma is the glue that holds the mortal realm together, and her presence alone gives the film a gravitas that it leans on heavily.

The film takes some creative liberties that deviate from the beloved book by Kami Garcia and Margaret Stohl, which might ruffle some feathers if you’re a die-hard fan of the series. The essence is still there, but like any adaptation, some of the nuances get lost in translation from page to screen. But hey, it’s Hollywood, right? Changes are part of the package deal.

Director Richard LaGravenese gives us a visual feast with some pretty slick CGI, from spinning dinner tables to mystical libraries that made the book nerd in me squeal with joy. However, sometimes the special effects felt like they were compensating for a script that lacked a bit of the book’s depth.

Overall, “Beautiful Creatures” is a cinematic comfort food. It’s got romance, magic, and a dash of Southern Gothic flair that’s as rare as a blue moon. It might not be the most original film under the sun (or the moon, in this case), but it’s a fun ride if you’re willing to suspend your disbelief and just enjoy the magic.

So, grab your popcorn and maybe a spell book (just in case), and settle in for “Beautiful Creatures.” It’s a bewitching tale that reminds us that the real magic is, sometimes, just allowing yourself to enjoy the ride.

‘Til next time, keep those reels rolling!

Peace & Popcorn,

Roger

Movie-a-Day Challenge: The In Between

The in between

This post is part of my movie-a-day challenge in which I will watch a film every day for 365 days. You can see all the posts for this challenge HERE

Hey, Digital Dreamers!

I just floated down from the tearjerker cloud after watching “The In Between,” and boy, do I have some thoughts! Grab your fave snack and settle in, because I’m about to spill the celestial tea on this otherworldly love flick.

So, “The In Between” is like if “Ghost” and “The Fault in Our Stars” had a movie baby. It stars Joey King, who’s basically the reigning queen of teen dramas, as Tessa, a gal who’s as cynical about love as I am about getting out of bed on Mondays. And then there’s the charming-as-heck Kyle Allen, who plays Skylar, the boy who might just make you believe in the whole “love at first sight” gig.

Their meet-cute is pure rom-com gold with a side of cringe — a chance encounter at a movie theater where the projector decides to take an unscheduled vacation. Fast forward through some adorably awkward moments, and we’ve got ourselves a love story, folks!

But because we can’t have nice things without a little heartache, the universe decides to throw a cosmic wrench into the works. Cue the waterworks and some serious ‘why, universe, why?’ vibes. After a tragedy that I won’t spoil (because I’m nice like that), Tessa’s left sifting through her grief and piecing together the mystery of whether the love she’s lost is reaching out from the “in between.”

Now let’s dive into the deep end — the feels. Joey King? She brings it. The girl can swing from quirky to gut-wrenchingly sorrowful in a heartbeat, and it’s a rollercoaster I didn’t mind riding. And Kyle Allen has this down-to-earth charm that kinda makes you wanna write love letters or something equally mushy.

The film itself? It’s shot with this dreamy, soft glow that’s basically Instagram’s Valencia filter come to life. There’s this ethereal quality to it that’s perfect for the movie’s whole ‘love beyond the grave’ vibe. And the score? Let’s just say it’s on my playlist, and now I can’t look at the stars without getting all misty-eyed.

But here’s the thing — “The In Between” treads a fine line between sweet and saccharine. Sometimes it hits the mark, sometimes it’s a bit like eating too much candy; a sugar rush followed by a crash. And the pacing can be as unpredictable as WiFi on a windy day. One minute it’s all go, and the next, you’re wondering what happened to the plot while you were blinking.

Also, if you’re not into the whole supernatural love connection thing, this might not be the flick for you. It’s a story that asks you to not just suspend disbelief but to shoot it into space.

But hey, if you’re in the mood for a good cry or a romantic cuddle with your pet pillow, “The In Between” is your ticket to Feelsville. It’s got enough heart to make you sigh and enough spirit to lift your… well, spirits.

So, snuggle up, pass the tissues, and let yourself drift into the sweet sorrow and star-crossed love of “The In Between.” I loved it!

Keep dreaming and streaming,

Roger✨🍿🎬

Movie-a-Day Challenge: Purple Hearts

Purple hearts

This post is part of my movie-a-day challenge in which I will watch a film every day for 60 days. You can see all the posts for this challenge HERE

Hey, Film Fanatics!

So, I just curled up with a bowl of popcorn and my too-expensive streaming service to watch “Purple Hearts,” and I’ve got some feels to share. You know, it’s one of those flicks where love and life throw some curveballs, and you’re not sure whether to cheer or grab a tissue.

Let’s talk about the premise first: it’s a bit like if Hallmark met ‘An Officer and a Gentleman,’ with a sprinkle of Spotify playlists on top. Cassie, played by Sofia Carson (who’s also belting out tunes like it’s her personal concert), is a struggling musician with a heart condition that’s got more issues than Vogue. Then we’ve got Luke, played by Nicholas Galitzine, who’s a Marine with a past that’s murkier than my coffee.

They’re like oil and water, cats and dogs, peanut butter and… onions? Anyway, they clash. Majorly. But here’s the catch – they end up marrying for the military benefits (because healthcare, y’all – I can relate) with a plan that’s got ‘What could possibly go wrong?’ written all over it in neon lights.

Now, you think you know where this is going, right? Pretend love turns into the real deal, with lots of longing looks and almost-kisses? Bingo! But don’t roll your eyes just yet. “Purple Hearts” serves up the cheese, but like that gourmet kind you can’t stop nibbling on. It’s predictable, sure, but comforting, like your grandma’s casserole.

Sofia Carson isn’t just a Disney alum here; she’s giving us depth, people! And the girl can sing – the soundtrack is like a character in its own right. Then there’s Nicholas Galitzine, who’s giving off broody vibes that might just make you overlook his character’s less savory moments. Together, they kind of work in a ‘we shouldn’t root for this, but we are’ way.

The film’s got heart (pun absolutely intended), and it doesn’t shy away from the real stuff either. It brushes against heavy themes – war, healthcare woes, the meaning of sacrifice. It doesn’t dive deep, but it dips its toes enough to make you think a little between the swoons.

Sure, the romance might be as by-the-book as they come, and some subplots could’ve used a little more baking in the story oven, but “Purple Hearts” isn’t pretending to be anything it’s not. It’s got its sappy, tear-jerker moments that might have you reaching for the tissues or rolling your eyes – sometimes both at the same time.

Is it groundbreaking cinema? Nope. Is it a cozy night in with a movie that knows its audience? Heck yeah. “Purple Hearts” is the film equivalent of that one song you say you’ll listen to just ironically, but then it’s on repeat for a week straight.

So, grab your comfort snack of choice, check any cynicism at the door, and let “Purple Hearts” take you on a little emotional rollercoaster. It’s a nice reminder that sometimes, the simplest stories can be just what the doctor ordered.

Stay snuggly and keep streaming,

Roger

Movie-A-Day Challenge: Bullet Train

Bullet train

This post is part of my movie-a-day challenge in which I will watch a film every day for 365 days. You can see all the posts for this challenge HERE

Hey Movie Buffs!

I just hopped off the crazy ride that is “Bullet Train” and, let me tell you, it’s like someone threw a bunch of assassins into a blender with a Quentin Tarantino script and pressed the ‘frappe’ button. If that sounds like your kind of smoothie, then buckle up!

So, “Bullet Train” is basically the ‘Little Engine That Could’ on steroids, with Brad Pitt leading the charge. He plays this hitman named Ladybug – and yes, that’s his real code name in the movie – who’s all about bad luck and self-help audiobooks. It’s Brad Pitt doing his best Brad Pitt, and I’m here for it. He’s charming, a little bit clumsy, and just trying to get through his mission without any hiccups – which, of course, is like trying to keep your ice cream from melting in the desert.

The train’s stuffed with colorful characters, each with their own quirky names and murder-y agendas. Joey King plays Prince with a baby face and a deadly grip, while Aaron Taylor-Johnson and Brian Tyree Henry are this hilarious hitman duo who could have their own sitcom. I’d watch it – “Lemon and Tangerine’s Murder Adventures” or something.

The action is as relentless as an espresso shot. There’s not a dull moment on this train; it’s all fistfights, plot twists, and did-that-really-just-happen moments. David Leitch, the director, clearly had a field day with this. Remember “John Wick”? Imagine that but with more laughs and a speeding train. The fight choreography deserves a chef’s kiss – it’s like a ballet where everyone’s trying to stab each other.

But listen, it’s not perfect. The movie’s pacing is like if you tried to read a book in a nightclub; it’s all over the place. The story wants to be deeper with themes of fate and karma, but it’s like bringing a philosophy book to a gunfight – not the right time, buddy. And sometimes the jokes are trying too hard to land in Deadpool territory but end up in the “try again” bin.

Here’s the deal – “Bullet Train” isn’t going to move mountains or change your life. It’s the kind of movie you watch with your buddies to make fun of and then talk about your favorite kills afterwards. It’s a popcorn flick, a switch-off-your-brain-and-enjoy-the-ride type of deal.

So, should you watch it? If you love action with a side of comedy and aren’t looking for Oscar-worthy material, then absolutely. Get your ticket, grab your popcorn, and enjoy the mayhem. Just don’t expect to come out as a philosopher, ’cause the only deep thought you’ll have is whether Ladybug’s bad luck is actually the funniest thing about this whole wild ride.

Until next time, keep your movies action-packed and your snacks within reach!

Peace out,

Roger

My Binge-Worthy Challenge: A Movie a Day Keeps the Boredom Away! 🍿

This is the first post of my movie-a-day challenge in which I will watch a film every day for 365 days. You can see all the posts for this challenge HERE

Hey friends! 🙌

Guess what? I’ve gone a tad bit cuckoo and decided to dive headfirst into a crazy challenge: to watch a movie EVERY SINGLE DAY for the next YEAR. Yep, you read that right. The next 365 days are about to get reel! (See what I did there? 😜)

Why on Earth…?

Okay, I know what you’re thinking. “Umm, don’t you have a life? Why on earth are you doing this challenge?”

Honestly? I’ve just been feeling like I’m in a rut lately, now that the weather has turned colder (it snowed yesterday!). With the year winding down, I wanted to do something fun and different. Plus, (and this is a biggie) I’ve got this MASSIVE movie queue on multiple streaming services that’s been gathering digital dust. I mean, honestly, I think I might be singlehandedly keeping some of these platforms in business. So, another sneaky goal? Figure out which services I truly love and which ones to kick to the curb. Also, movies, well, they’ve always been my jam. So why not? 🍿🎥

Originally, I was going to only do this challenge for 60 days – November and December.  But then I thought, “Roger, what’s the fun in that?  Where’s the challenge?  Anyone can do 60 days.”  And I was right.  So I made it a little more challenging and a little more interesting…and a lot more lengthy.

The Rules

Alright, folks, it’s not just about popping a bag of popcorn and zoning out. I’ve set some “guidelines” for this little challenge of mine:

  1. No repeats! That’s right. No matter how tempting it is to watch “Lord of the Rings” for the umpteenth time, it’s a no-go. Every film must be one that I haven’t seen before.
  2. Mix of genres: From rom-coms to documentaries, I’m diving into it all.
  3. Old and New: One day it might be a black & white classic, and the next, something that just dropped on Netflix (or one of the other zillion services I’m subscribed to) or even a film at my local theater.
  4. World Cinema: Gotta expand those horizons, right? A sprinkle of Bollywood, a dash of French romance, and whatever else the world offers.
  5. Feature Length Only: No cheating by watching movie shorts.  Only full length feature films allowed.

What I Hope to Gain

I mean, besides an excuse to munch on popcorn and stay in my PJs?

  • A broader perspective: Movies are like windows to different worlds, cultures, and experiences.
  • Conversations: Trust me, give me a topic, and I’ll have a movie reference ready by the end of this.
  • Whittling Down My Queue: By this time next year, that intimidating ‘to-be-seen’ list better be way shorter. And, who knows, I might find a few new all-time faves!
  • Streamlining Streaming: By the end of this, I hope to have a clearer idea of which streaming services are worth my bucks and which ones get the boot.
  • Creative inspiration: Who knows, I might just pen down a script by this time next year! 😂

Join Me!

Fancy a movie night (or 365)? If you’re up for it, join me in this madness! Share your recommendations, your reviews, or even your rants. Let’s make it a communal cinephile experience! 🎬

Will I make it to the end without turning into a couch potato? Will I finally understand the hype behind “Inception”? There’s only one way to find out. So, folks, grab your blankets, your popcorn, and let’s get this movie marathon started!

Stay tuned, and may the film force be with you! 🌌

Until next time,
Roger

P.S. Day 1’s pick? “Bullet Train” — a pulse-pounding adventure flick about assassins. Wish me luck! 🌟

Growing a ‘Stache for November: The Whys and Hows

Pexels ketut subiyanto 4307710

Hey, friends! 🧔

November is knocking on our doors, and with it comes the delightful and ever-popular tradition of growing a mustache, affectionately dubbed “Movember.” It’s not just about sporting some stylish facial fuzz, but there’s a deeper meaning to this whiskery adventure. If you’re thinking of joining in or just curious, buckle up! We’re about to embark on a hairy journey together.

Why Grow a ‘Stache in November?

Movember began in 2003 in Melbourne, Australia. It started with a group of friends aiming to bring back the mustache as a style trend. However, the movement soon evolved to serve a larger purpose – raising awareness for men’s health issues, including prostate cancer, testicular cancer, mental health, and suicide prevention.

Each ‘stache you see in November becomes a conversation starter, an opportunity to discuss topics that often stay in the shadows. Plus, it’s a chance to raise funds for research and support services.

Tips for Growing Your First Mustache (from personal experience and research):

  1. Patience is Key: Remember, Rome wasn’t built in a day, and neither is a glorious mustache. You might experience an itchy phase or uneven growth, but stick with it!
  2. Regular Maintenance: Trim using a good-quality beard trimmer, and consider investing in mustache scissors for more precision.
  3. Stay Clean: Wash your mustache with a beard shampoo to keep it fresh and hygienic.
  4. Moisturize: Beard oils or balms can help reduce itchiness and keep your ‘stache soft.
  5. Style it Right: Once your mustache has some decent length, you can play around with various styles using mustache wax. The Handlebar? The Pencil? The possibilities are endless!
  6. Stay Healthy: A good diet, rich in vitamins and minerals, can support healthy hair growth.

Joining the Cause:

Growing a mustache is fun, but remember the deeper purpose. Join the Movember movement by signing up on their official website, creating a profile, and spreading awareness. You can also raise funds, host events, or simply share your mustache journey on social media using the hashtag #Movember.

Wrapping It Up:

Movember is more than a facial fashion statement. It’s a global movement that unites people for a significant cause. So, whether you’re growing a ‘stache for the first time or you’re a seasoned pro, remember the impact you’re making, one whisker at a time.

Let’s grow, show, and support together this November! 🖤👨🏽‍🦱👨🏼‍🦳👨🏻‍🦰👨🏿‍🦲🧔🏻🧔🏾🧔🏼🧔🏽🧔🏿
