Movie-a-Day Challenge: Asteroid City
This post is part of my movie-a-day challenge in which I will watch a film every day for 365 days. Today is Day 45. You can see all the posts for this challenge HERE. To see the original Movie-a-Day Challenge post, click HERE.
Hey there, friends!
So, I just finished watching Wes Anderson’s latest masterpiece, “Asteroid City,” and oh boy, do I have thoughts! First off, let me just say, Wes Anderson is like that weird, artsy uncle you can’t help but adore. His movies are this beautiful blend of eccentricity and meticulous detail, and “Asteroid City” is no exception. I mean, the guy’s got an eye for style that’s as unique as a zebra in a horse race. 🦓
The plot? It’s classic Anderson – a bit quirky, somewhat whimsical, and totally out-of-the-box. Picture this: a small, dusty town in the American Southwest during the 1950s, buzzing with the excitement of the Junior Stargazer/Space Cadet convention. It’s like a scene straight out of a retro sci-fi comic book, with kids and adults alike geeking out over astronomy and space. The town, Asteroid City, becomes a melting pot of quirky characters, each with their own peculiarities and dreams.
But then, as is typical in Anderson’s universe, the unexpected happens. A strange astronomical event occurs, and suddenly, the town’s cut off from the rest of the world. It’s like the universe decided to play a cosmic prank on them. The characters, ranging from a brilliant scientist to a charismatic cowboy, are thrown into a whirlwind of bizarre, yet strangely relatable, situations. It’s like watching a dream where everything makes sense and nothing does, all at the same time.
The film’s aesthetic is a feast for the eyes. It’s like stepping into a vintage postcard sprinkled with a dash of surrealism. The colors pop like bubblegum on a summer day, and the attention to detail in every frame is mind-blowing. It’s as if Anderson is whispering, “Hey, look at how much I care about the little things.” And trust me, we’re all ears (and eyes).
One thing I adore about Anderson’s films is how they feel like a warm, slightly odd, hug. “Asteroid City” has its moments of laugh-out-loud humor, tender sentimentality, and just plain weirdness – a combo that somehow works like avocado on toast. Delicious, but you wouldn’t have thought of it.
As for the sensory experience, the film is a smorgasbord. The soundtrack is a quirky mix that perfectly complements the on-screen action and the dialogue is snappy and witty, with lines that’ll stick with you like a catchy tune.
Here’s a fun fact: Did you know that Wes Anderson often uses miniatures and hand-made sets to create his unique visual style? It’s like he’s a master chef, carefully selecting each ingredient to create the perfect dish.
To wrap this up (because all good things must come to an end), “Asteroid City” is a trip worth taking, especially if you’re a Wes Anderson fan and love weird movies. It’s a film that stays with you, like that one summer you’ll never forget. So, sink into a comfy seat and let Wes Anderson take you on a journey you didn’t know you needed. I think this is also a film you’ll want to watch more than once because there are so many little things going on that are easy to miss the first time through.
Until next time, keep it quirky and a little bit weird, just like “Asteroid City”! 🌠
Peace out,
Roger 🎬✨
